Modern mathematics formulates terms that represent common abstractions from theoretical questions and practical applications. Through its research, it gains fundamental knowledge, which can be proven in terms of its efficiency and accuracy. Because of their great generality, these terms can be applied in many ways to specific problems, for example in computer science, physics and other natural sciences, engineering, medicine or economics. Suggestions from these areas in turn drive the development of mathematics, since, for example, complex mathematical models can be examined not only theoretically, but also with the help of appropriate software (EDP). The departments of mathematics and computer science at Freie Universität are not only geographically close, but also because of their content. Both gain their importance in science from the knowledge of abstract structures in the interplay with the solution of complex problems from natural and engineering sciences, industry and society. Business mathematics, statistics and technical mathematics have their origins in mathematics.
The mono bachelor's degree includes the core subject of mathematics, consisting of a compulsory area and a specialization area, a supplementary area and the general vocational preparation study area.
A 30 CP module offer can be selected as a supplementary area, however, all students are strongly advised to consult with the specialist representatives of the department. The study regulations state that computer science is recommended. Further regulations for choosing a minor can be found in the study regulations.
At the end of the course, the exemplary deepening and differentiation of a selected field of study takes place through the independent scientific development of a self-selected problem (Bachelor thesis).
The general vocational preparation study area (ABV) includes an internship as well as the following areas of competence: foreign languages, information and media competence, gender & diversity competence, organizational and management competence, personal and socio-communicative competence and subject-related additional qualifications in which additional practical professional knowledge and skills are imparted will. Aims, content and structure of the general vocational preparation study area are regulated in a separate ABV study and examination regulations.
The course regulations regulate the structure and process of the course. It contains detailed descriptions of the content and qualification goals of each individual module and sample curriculum plans. The examination regulations define the type and requirements of the module examinations. In the regulations, the credit points (CP) for each module or event as well as the workload in hours for the entire course are specified.
|module||Linear algebra I.|
|module||Linear Algebra II|
|module||Computer-Oriented Mathematics I|
|module||Computer-Oriented Mathematics II|
|Within the specialization area, the compulsory module "Scientific work in mathematics" as well as modules within an elective area with a volume of 20 to 30 CP must be completed. Selectable modules can be found in the study regulations.|
Bachelor graduates have scientific knowledge and practical skills that qualify them for a job or a postgraduate course.
Activities for mathematicians open up in business, administration, research and teaching. In the economy there are employment opportunities in banks, insurance companies, management consultancies and research institutes. There are also possible applications in public administration, mostly at statistical offices and authorities as well as in universities and development departments of companies. Mathematics graduates are employed particularly in companies with an IT focus, especially in the area of ??software or systems, as well as in departments of all industries that deal with information technology. Technical progress keeps opening up new fields of activity, such as in biotechnology or medical technology.
A master’s degree and, if applicable, a doctorate are prerequisites for management positions or employment in research and teaching.
