Overview

The Meteorology Master’s degree is a disciplinary, more research-oriented degree that builds on the previous Bachelor’s degree. The subject is the physics and chemistry of the atmosphere. In addition, basic topics such as theoretical meteorology and numerical modeling are dealt with. This basic knowledge is applied in the context of weather, climate and climate change, extreme events and air quality and deepened in a practice-oriented manner. These central aspects are supplemented by remote sensing, air chemistry and statistical meteorology. In particular, students are enabled to to independently take up current issues in meteorology and climatology and to answer them with scientific methods as well as to present the results of their own work. The aim of the master’s degree in meteorology is to prepare for professional practice in a scientific field of meteorology and related fields of earth system research.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

To be admitted to the master’s degree, applicants must demonstrate the following requirements:

  • Professional German or equivalent foreign degree from a geoscientific or physical university degree with a share of 20 CP in meteorology, 20 CP in physics, 15 CP in mathematics and an additional 5 CP in the fields of physics, mathematics or computer science.
  • Proof of language proficiency in English ( level B2 GER ).

Proof of German language skills must be provided for applicants who have completed their degree at a foreign university or equivalent institution . This can be done by passing the German language test for university entrance (DSH) or by providing evidence of an equivalent level of knowledge according to the regulations for the German language test for university entrance of foreign applicants at the Free University of Berlin.

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

The master’s course comprises five study areas, an interdisciplinary elective area and the master’s thesis.

The structure and course of the course are regulated by the course and examination regulations. It contains detailed descriptions of the content and qualification goals of each individual module and an exemplary course plan. It defines the type and requirements of the examination performance of the modules and the master’s examination. In the regulations, the credit points (CP) for each module or event as well as the workload in hours for the entire course are specified.

The specialty meteorological subjects / compulsory elective study area allows specialization according to individual skills and goals. A catalog of selectable modules is listed in the study and examination regulations. The interdisciplinary elective area enables an interdisciplinary perspective.

The master's thesis should show that the students are able to independently work on and present a research task using scientific methods. After successfully completing the study program, the university degree Master of Science (M.Sc.) is awarded.

Graduates have in-depth scientific knowledge and advanced professional skills. With a master’s degree in meteorology, you are excellently qualified for scientific work at universities and research institutions in the field of meteorology, atmospheric physics, climatology and earth system research. Potential employers include the meteorological institutes at universities in Germany and abroad, the German Weather Service, the Federal Armed Forces Geoinformation Service, the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology in Hamburg, the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research, the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research and the European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts.
