Overview

This master’s course deals with the deepening of technical knowledge as well as the development of the ability to represent a complex mathematical subject orally and in writing. At the same time, methodological and didactic skills are acquired for the teaching content of the secondary level. In selected chapters of didactics, the students demonstrate subject-didactic assessment and action competence by being able to present technical, didactic and educational aspects appropriately and appropriately for the target group.

The practical semester takes place in the 3rd semester of the master’s degree. Here, students have the opportunity to try out what they have learned in a protected setting. The aim is to develop students' skills in the following areas:

o Planning, conducting and reflecting on lessons

o Research-based learning (theory-based and research methodical-empirically founded reflection on school practice)

o Self-regulation (reflection on personal resources and goals)

o Knowledge of extra-curricular tasks at the school

o Competencies for professional development based on procedures and instruments (feedback, video circle, etc.) by the specialist advisors

o Knowledge of the conditions of the 2nd training phase (preparatory service or legal clerkship)

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

The teaching master’s course with subject 1 or 2 in mathematics is studied with a second subject; the teaching-related subject combination is specified by the previous bachelor’s degree.

The modules in the table below are expanded by modules from the other subject. The educational science modules listed in the table are completed once, regardless of subject 1 and subject 2.

The structure and course of the course are regulated by the course regulations. It contains detailed descriptions of the content and qualification goals of each individual module and an exemplary course plan. The examination regulations define the type and requirements of the examination performances of the modules and the master’s examination. In the regulations, the credit points (LP) for each module or each event as well as the workload in hours for the entire course are specified.

The master's thesis can be completed in the specialist science of subject 1 or 2, in educational science or in the subject didactics of subject 1 or 2 and should show that the students are able to work on and present a research task independently using scientific methods. After successfully completing the study program, the university degree Master of Education (M.Ed.) is awarded.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

To be admitted to the master’s degree in teaching, applicants must demonstrate the following requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree related to this master’s degree with an integrative study of two subjects and professional teaching related to teaching (educational science and subject didactics), or an equivalent other university degree.

The teacher training-related subject combination from the previous Bachelor's degree must be retained. The core subject of the bachelor's degree is studied as subject 1, the modules of the bachelor's degree as subject 2.

Proof of German language skills must be provided for applicants who have completed their degree at a foreign university or equivalent institution . This can be done by passing the German language test for university admission (DSH) or by providing evidence of an equivalent level of knowledge in accordance with the regulations for the German language test for university admission of foreign applicants to the Free University of Berlin.

CAREER PROSPECTS

Graduates have in-depth scientific knowledge and advanced professional skills.

A successfully completed three-year bachelor's degree and a subsequent two-year master's degree with (up to) two-year preparatory service lead to the office of the student council.

In addition to teaching at schools, there are jobs in the economy, administration, research and teaching. In the economy there are employment opportunities in banks, insurance companies, management consultancies and research institutes, among others. There are also possible uses in public administration, mostly in statistical offices and authorities as well as in universities and development departments of companies. Mathematics graduates are particularly employed in companies with an IT focus, especially in the area of ??software or systems, as well as in departments of all industries that deal with information technology. Technical progress keeps opening up new fields of activity, such as in biotechnology or medical technology.
