Overview

Computer science is the science of the systematic and automated processing of information. She researches fundamental procedures of information processing and general methods of their application in the areas of technical, theoretical and practical computer science.

Graduates of the master’s degree in computer science teacher training deepen their computer science knowledge and acquire basic skills for professional behavior by teachers in class and school. Under guidance, you can plan, implement and reflect on lessons based on criteria, school-type and target-oriented. They master the principles of scientific work and are able to communicate subject-related with different actors in the context of school and upbringing.

The third semester is the practical semester, in which the students can use the technical, didactic and pedagogical skills acquired during their studies for five months at an internship school.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

To be admitted to the master’s degree in teaching, applicants must demonstrate the following requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree related to this master’s degree with an integrative study of two subjects and teaching related professional science (educational science and subject didactics), or an equivalent other university degree.

The teacher training-related subject combination from the previous Bachelor's degree must be retained. The core subject of the bachelor's degree is studied as subject 1, the modules of the bachelor's degree as subject 2.

Proof of German language skills must be provided for applicants who have completed their degree at a foreign university or equivalent institution . This can be done by passing the German language test for university admission (DSH) or by providing evidence of an equivalent level of knowledge in accordance with the regulations for the German language test for university admission of foreign applicants to the Free University of Berlin.

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

The subjects must be taken in accordance with the subject combination of the previous first professional degree. If computer science was completed within the framework of the previous first professional degree with 90 CP, then in the master’s degree in computer science as subject 1 with 37 CP must be completed. If computer science was completed within the framework of the previous first professional degree with 60 CP, then in the master’s degree in computer science as subject 2 with 42 CP must be completed.

The following modules are supplemented by the respective other subject, education, an interdisciplinary elective area and the master's thesis. This is shown in the table "Modules of the degree program" below.

The following modules must be completed in the Master of Education Computer Science:

  • Module: Didactics of Computer Science - Selected Topics (5 CP)
  • Module: Didactics of Computer Science - Development, Evaluation and Research (5 CP)

Students who take computer science as subject 1 also complete the following module:

  • Module: Practical School Studies in Computer Science - Subject 1 (12 CP).

Students who take computer science as subject 2 also complete the following module:

  • Module: Practical School Studies in Computer Science - Subject 2 (12 CP).

In addition, students who take Computer Science as subject 1 must choose and complete modules totaling 15 CP from an elective area that, due to its size (68 modules), enables individual design. Students who take Computer Science as subject 2 must choose and complete modules totaling 20 CP from the same elective area (68 modules). For a detailed list of the modules to be taken as well as other module registration criteria, please refer to the above-mentioned study and examination regulations for the Master of Education in the IT section.

The master's thesis
It can be completed in the specialist science of subject 1 or 2, in educational science or in the subject didactics of subject 1 or 2 and should show that the students are able to work on and present a research task independently using scientific methods. After successfully completing the study program, the university degree Master of Education (M.Ed.) is awarded.

CAREER PROSPECTS

Graduates of the master’s course are initially qualified for access to the preparatory service for teaching at integrated secondary schools and grammar schools in Berlin or a nationwide equivalent preparatory service. The degree qualifies further

  • for a professional activity in the scientific field (research assistant at universities, technical colleges and other institutions)
  • for extracurricular educational work at schools and for extracurricular educational work such as adult education, further and advanced training, extracurricular support offers
  • Depending on the subjects studied - fields of work in different areas such as institutions of public administration, science communication, press, radio, television and new media, publishing (including school book publishers), archives and libraries, museums and memorials as well as consulting and personnel development.
