Overview

In view of an increasingly globalized world in which local, national and global processes are interwoven, the "science of the culturally foreign" plays a key role in understanding the complex present that must be examined in the context of global and transnational interdependencies in the synopsis of micro and macro levels.

In terms of philosophy of science, the master’s course ties in with the social and cultural science tradition of the subject and draws on its own method of historically comparative social research. Regional knowledge of Asian and African countries as well as the emphasis on international experience as part of an independent research project underline the importance that the Master's degree in Social and Cultural Anthropology attaches to intercultural understanding.

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

The master’s course comprises a compulsory, compulsory elective and research area. From the four profile areas offered, students can choose two profiles according to their own focus.

The structure and course of the course are regulated by the course regulations. It contains detailed descriptions of the content and qualification goals of each individual module and an exemplary course plan. The examination regulations define the type and requirements of the examination performances of the modules and the master’s examination. In the regulations, the credit points (LP) for each module or each event as well as the workload in hours for the entire course are specified.

The master's thesis should show that the students are able to independently work on and present a research task using scientific methods. After successfully completing the study program, the university degree Master of Arts (MA) is awarded.
