Overview

The more research-oriented Master’s degree in Korean Studies / East Asian Studies deepens and expands the basic specialist knowledge acquired in the Bachelor’s degree in Korean Studies / East Asian Studies or in a comparable Korea-specific degree program in the field of Korean and East Asian studies. The main focus of the Korean Studies / East Asian Studies master’s course is the social-scientific examination of the subject of study Korea in an East Asian context. The aim of the Korean Studies / East Asian Studies master’s course is to acquire or deepen scientific and professional knowledge and skills in Korean and East Asian studies.
The master's degree in Korean Studies / East Asian Studies enables students to analyze and interpret institutions, actors and processes in politics, economy and society in Korea and to classify them in their respective contexts, whereby the topics are also presented in the regional context of Korea in East Asia . In addition, skills in analyzing gender relations in various social, political and historical contexts are developed. The students acquire the ability to conduct independent scientific research in the field of social science research on Korea.

 

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

The structure and process of the course are regulated by the course regulations. It contains detailed descriptions of the content and qualification goals of each individual module and an exemplary course plan. The examination regulations define the type and requirements of the examination performances of the modules and the master’s examination. In the regulations, the credit points (CP) for each module or event as well as the workload in hours for the entire course are specified.

In the interdisciplinary and transregional area, the specialist spectrum is to be expanded by completing two modules. Module proposals can be found in the study regulations.

The master's thesis should show that the students are able to independently work on and present a research task using scientific methods. After successfully completing the study program, the university degree Master of Arts (MA) is awarded.

With the skills in Korean and East Asian studies acquired during their studies, students acquire the ability to communicate and act successfully in intercultural contexts in East Asia. The master's degree in Korean Studies / East Asian Studies provides knowledge and skills that are intended to prepare people for responsible positions in scientifically demanding professional fields inside and outside the university:

International relations (foreign service, international organizations, non-governmental organizations); Education (universities, scientific institutions, adult education); Communication (press and media, publishers, public relations, archives and libraries); Companies (international trade relations, company representation in Korea, personnel and management training); Activity as advisor; Activity as translator; Foundations and Associations.

 

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

To be admitted to the master’s degree, applicants must demonstrate the following requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree with a degree in Korean Studies / East Asian Studies in the type and scope of the Bachelor's degree in Korean Studies / East Asian Studies at Freie Universität Berlin (90 CP or 60 CP) or an equivalent other university degree,
  • Proof of language proficiency in English (level B2 GER), provided that English is not your mother tongue and the university degree was not obtained at an educational institution in which English is the language of instruction.
