Overview

The master’s degree in Islamic Studies is a research-oriented, consecutive degree that enables students to apply scientific working methods and qualifies them for independent scientific work. It provides in-depth knowledge of the history, politics and law of the modern Islamic world, the history of ideas in the Islamic world, Islam in Europe and in South and Southeast Asia.

For the 2015/16 winter semester, a focus on “Islam in Europe” was set up within the course, taking into account the growing socio-political relevance of this research area. Students have the opportunity to specialize in this topic in three of the seven modules of the core area.

It enables students to methodically and theoretically analyze aspects of the Islamic religion and its manifestations in concrete historical and contemporary social contexts. This includes sub-areas such as religious practice, philosophy, politics, law, culture and theology, but also overarching aspects such as B. the gender dimension as well as the perceptions of self and others by Muslim and non-Muslim actors. The students receive an overview of current research discussions on the individual subject areas. The course aims to link the main research areas of the Institute for Islamic Studies and to make them fruitful for one another: (1) History, Politics and law in the Islamic world as well as Islam in Europe and South and Southeast Asia since the late 18th century and (2) the intellectual history of the Islamic world. A clear focus of the teaching is on imparting subject-relevant methods and theory.

The students have the opportunity to expand their skills in academic work - especially with Arabic sources - and in a subject-relevant second language, usually Turkish. The development, discussion and application of theoretical and methodological approaches, the exchange with advanced scientists and an interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary area that opens up access to the content and perspectives of other disciplines round off the study program.
