The master’s degree combines the academic study of contemporary literature in equal parts with preparation for fields of activity for literary scholars in the literary and cultural world.
Half of the modules convey application-related knowledge in the field of literature promotion, communication, criticism and marketing. In this part of the course, lecturers from the field are mainly employed. From a literary perspective, not only discourses and manifestations of new literature from different language areas are examined, but also the mechanisms of contemporary literature production and reception, especially with regard to (international) canonicalization and transfer processes.
Due to its practical orientation, the course contributes to professional orientation and improves the chances of a smooth transition to a career. With the focus on contemporary literature and transnationality, the graduates also have extensive knowledge of precisely those aspects that have a decisive influence on today's literary business.
The structure and course of the course are regulated by the course and examination regulations. It contains detailed descriptions of the content and qualification goals of each individual module and an exemplary course plan. It also defines the type and requirements of the examination performance of the modules and the master’s examination. In the regulations, the credit points (CP) are given for each module and each event.
Students either complete a seven-week internship in an institution of literary and cultural life or carry out a practical project in a comparable time frame.
The master's thesis (optionally on a topic of contemporary literature or applied literary studies) should show that the students are able to work independently on a research task using scientific methods. After successfully completing the study program, the university degree Master of Arts (MA) is awarded.
