The subjects of the courses in Spanish Philology with Latin American Studies (60 CP modules with prior language knowledge), Spanish (60 CP modules without prior language knowledge) and Spanish (30 CP modules with / without prior language knowledge) are language, literature, culture and history of Spain as well as of the Spanish-speaking countries and areas. The course consists of a practical language and a technical part. This consists of the core areas of linguistics, literary studies and regional studies. Areas of study in linguistics are in particular the theories and methods of general, Romance and Spanish linguistics, the language system of Spanish and its use, the variation of Spanish and its linguistic history, possibly taking into account other Ibero-Roman and Latin American varieties, history general, Romance and Spanish linguistics and language reflection as well as language in its socio-cultural, biological and application-related contexts.
Literary studies deals with the theories and methods of literary studies, with the history of literature in its course, text analysis and interpretation, with literature and non-literary text types and the area of ??literature and other media.
The subject of regional studies is the social and cultural conditions of the Spanish language areas (e.g. geography, history, politics, philosophy, art, everyday and regional cultures, media, social systems). The regional studies modules are usually offered in Spanish.
The teaching of language practice serves to develop the basic skills of reading, listening, speaking and writing with reference to the application-related levels of the Common European Framework of Reference (GER). Further study objectives are the development of strategies for language mediation and language acquisition as well as the use of language and independent and cooperative learning.
Spanish Philology and Latin American Studies are combined as a core subject with a 60-credit module or two 30-credit modules.
The study of Spanish Philology with Latin American Studies as a 90 CP core subject consists of the study areas language practice, linguistics, literary studies and regional studies as well as the study area general vocational preparation (ABV).
In the core subject Spanish Philology with Latin American Studies, the exemplary deepening and differentiation of a selected field of study takes place at the end of the course through independent scientific work on a self-selected problem (Bachelor thesis).
The general vocational preparation study area (ABV) includes an internship as well as the following areas of competence: foreign languages, information and media competence, gender & diversity competence, organizational and management competence, personal and socio-communicative competence and subject-related additional qualifications in which additional practical professional knowledge and skills are imparted will. The objectives, content and structure of the general vocational preparation study area are regulated in separate ABV study and examination regulations.
The course regulations regulate the structure and process of the course. It contains detailed descriptions of the content and qualification goals of each individual module and an exemplary course plan. The examination regulations define the type and requirements of the module examinations. In the regulations, the credit points (CP) for each module or event as well as the workload in hours for the entire course are specified.

If you have little or no prior knowledge of the language, the regular course is preceded by a two-semester preparatory language course. If you apply with little or no previous language knowledge, you will be enrolled directly in the pre-study language course.
If you have previous knowledge up to level B1 GER, this can be proven by appropriate evidence.
Otherwise, you can take the placement test in July at the FU's language center to prove your language level.
Bachelor graduates have scientific knowledge and practical skills that qualify them for a job or a postgraduate course. If Spanish Philology with Latin American Studies is studied as a module as part of a combined bachelor's degree, the chosen 90 CP core subject shapes the professional qualification.
Graduates of Spanish Philology with Latin American Studies can be employed in school and cultural policy, at universities, with publishing houses, in special libraries, in museums, the media, in various national and international cultural institutions, in the field of tourism, but also for foreign language-related activities .
Since not all graduates find a place on the narrow, specialist job market, the acquisition of additional qualifications, as they are already imparted in the General Vocational Preparation (ABV) study area, as well as early orientation with regard to employment opportunities and the personal application strategy are of great importance for a successful career start.
A master’s degree and, if applicable, a doctorate are prerequisites for management positions or employment in research and teaching.
