Middle Latin Philology deals with literary and non-literary Latin texts in the period from approx. 500 to 1500 AD as well as with their pre- and post-medieval tradition. In view of the cultural unity of medieval superstructure phenomena, Middle Latin Philology not only has to examine the inter-literary cross-relationships between Latin and vernacular texts, but also to carry out basic research on history and literary theory for all disciplines dealing with written evidence from the Middle Ages. The content of Middle Latin Philology is closely related to Classical Philology, which is divided into Greek and Latin Philology.
