Overview

Overview

As a basic science, biology explores the common principles of diversity and unity of all living beings and tries to explain the functional mechanisms of living systems with molecular terms and to formulate them in the form of laws about molecular and organic interactions. Biology analyzes and describes life processes in the area of ??molecules and macromolecular structures, examines the structure and function of single cells, plants, animals and humans and tries to explain the diverse relationships between living beings and to inanimate nature.

The 60 CP module offer does not cover the entire subject of the course (see course structure).

Program Structure

Biology as a core subject with the option to become a teacher is studied with a 60 CP module that is suitable for the desired teaching position and the teaching profession-related vocational science (LBW) study area. Biology as a 60 CP module offering with teacher training option must be combined with a core subject with teaching training option and the teaching profession-related vocational science (LBW) study area.

In the case of the core subject, at the end of the course there is an exemplary deepening and differentiation of a selected field of study through the independent scientific development of a self-selected problem (Bachelor thesis).

The teaching profession-related vocational studies (LBW) study area is a compulsory component of all teaching-related Bachelor degree programs. It consists of two educational modules, the module German as a second language and two subject didactic modules. Part of one educational science module is a school internship lasting several weeks.

The course regulations regulate the structure and process of the course. It contains detailed descriptions of the content and qualification goals of each individual module and an exemplary course plan. The examination regulations define the type and requirements of the module examinations. In the regulations, the credit points (CP) for each module or event as well as the workload in hours for the entire course are specified.

For students in the 90 LP core subject who intend to continue their studies in the small (one-year) master’s degree after completing the Bachelor’s degree, a module composition that differs slightly from the 90 LP core subject applies.

Career Prospects

Bachelor graduates have scientific knowledge and practical skills that qualify them for a job or a postgraduate course. Teaching at public schools in the State of Berlin is only possible for Bachelor graduates with a teaching degree option with a relevant teaching degree (Master of Education).

In addition to teaching at schools, graduates can find work in a wide variety of research institutions that deal, for example, with genetic engineering, molecular biology or toxicology. Subsequent employers can also be pharmaceutical companies, food companies, the chemical industry, but also federal and state authorities that deal with the compliance and enforcement of laws in the area of ??environment and health. In addition to classic laboratory and office work, biology graduates can work in the field. In management positions, on the other hand, projects have to be managed in both marketing and sales, e.g. to analyze product ranges.

A master’s degree and, if applicable, a doctorate are prerequisites for management positions or employment in research and teaching.
