The course "Art History with a Focus on Africa" ??provides basic knowledge of "old", modern and contemporary African art, fanned out into visual arts and visual culture (film, photography, advertising, comics, architecture). After an introductory phase, in the build-up phase there is a regional and thematic deepening as well as a focus on practice-related courses (exhibition, film, internet presentation, etc.) as well as methods and theories (post-colonial theory, transculturality, etc.). Humanities and historical work techniques are practiced, which are tested and proven in the bachelor thesis after a specialization module.

Program Structure

Art history with a major in Africa is combined as a core subject with a 60 credit module or two 30 credit modules.

In the core subject of art history with a major in Africa, an exemplary deepening and differentiation of a field of study takes place at the end of the course through independent scientific development of a self-selected problem (bachelor thesis).

The general vocational preparation study area (ABV) includes an internship as well as the following areas of competence: foreign languages, information and media competence, gender & diversity competence, organizational and management competence, personal and socio-communicative competence and subject-related additional qualifications in which additional practical professional knowledge and skills are imparted will. The objectives, content and structure of the general vocational preparation study area are regulated in separate ABV study and examination regulations.

The course regulations regulate the structure and process of the course. It contains detailed descriptions of the content and qualification goals of each individual module and an exemplary course plan. The examination regulations define the type and requirements of the module examinations. In the regulations, the credit points (CP) for each module or event as well as the workload in hours for the entire course are specified.

Career Prospects

Bachelor graduates have scientific knowledge and practical skills that qualify them for a job or a postgraduate course.

The study of the bachelor's degree in art history with a focus on Africa is intended to prepare students for activities in various professional fields. Above all, activities in the areas of cultural management and public relations, publishing, media work, journalism, art education and museum education, adult education, image archives and digitization as well as activities in tourism and in institutions of international cultural cooperation come into question.

A master’s degree and, if applicable, a doctorate are prerequisites for management positions or employment in research and teaching.
