The study of religious studies at the Free University of Berlin places the emphasis on the history of religion on the European, especially ancient Greek and Roman tradition, whereby cultural traditions and updates of non-European non-scriptural and script-centered religions can also be included. Against the background of reflection on the history of science as well as a historical-anthropological and material-hermeneutic orientation, basic concepts, theories and methods relevant to religious studies are critically thought through, Specific religious and cultural-historical developments are analyzed and compared with one another, and processes of transfer and transformation across time and space, in particular of religious ideas and practices from antiquity, are researched in their cultural contexts. This includes the mastery of scientific working methods, the ability to critically analyze sources and research as well as the ability to appropriately present scientific findings in a factual and linguistic manner.
