Overview

History deals with the changes in society, economy, state, politics and culture that take place in the past and present in the interdependence of individual and collective forces. It is based, among other things, on the particularity of the respective sources and the techniques used to evaluate them. The bachelor's degree in history at Freie Universität Berlin comprises four major subjects:

  • Ancient history (8th century BC to 6th century AD)
  • Medieval history of Europe and the Middle East (early and later Middle Ages, 5th-15th centuries)
  • Modern history of Europe and the world (early modern times: 16th-18th centuries, late modern times: 18th-21st centuries, contemporary history: 20th / 21st centuries
  • Didactics of history

The aim of the history course is to acquire knowledge of German, European and world history and to discuss general issues in the subject from an overarching perspective, in particular the history of politics, society, culture, economy, religion, discourses and social relations. Furthermore, historical methodological competence for the independent selection and development of topics in larger historical contexts on the basis of sources of all genres and scientific literature should be acquired and fundamental problems of history and historical studies and their more recent currents should be understood. Last but not least, the aim of the story is to acquire the ability to

In addition, historical didactic parts of the course are integrated into the course. The didactics of history as a sub-area of ??historical studies asks about the functions of historical knowledge in society. It examines how knowledge about the past as living history takes its place in the historical culture of the present and what historical meaning people create when dealing with history. As a science of historical learning, one of its main areas of activity is the scientific training of future history teachers.

 

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

 

History as a core subject with the option to become a teacher is studied with a 60 CP module that is suitable for the desired teaching position and the subject of teaching related vocational science (LBW). History as a 60 CP module offering with teacher training option must be combined with a core subject with teaching training option and the teaching profession-related vocational studies (LBW) study area.

The study of history as a 90 CP core subject at the Free University of Berlin is divided into four areas of study:

  • Old story
  • Medieval history of Europe and the Middle East
  • Modern history of Europe and the world
  • Didactics of history

The teaching profession-related vocational studies (LBW) study area is a compulsory component of all teaching-related bachelor's degree programs. It consists of two educational modules, the module German as a second language and two subject didactic modules. Part of one educational science module is a school internship lasting several weeks.

In the core subject of history, at the end of the course there is an exemplary deepening and differentiation of a selected field of study through the independent scientific development of a self-selected problem (bachelor thesis).

The structure and course of the course are regulated by the course regulations. It contains detailed descriptions of the content and qualification goals of each individual module and an exemplary course plan. The examination regulations define the type and requirements of the module exams. In the regulations, the credit points (CP) for each module or event as well as the workload in hours for the entire course are specified.

CAREER PROSPECTS

 

Graduates of the bachelor's degree program have scientific knowledge and practical skills that qualify them for a job or a postgraduate degree. In the State of Berlin, bachelor graduates with a teaching degree can only gain access to teaching positions at public schools with a relevant teaching degree (Master of Education).

In addition to teaching at schools, there are other fields of activity, such as editorial work in publishing houses, extracurricular educational work fields, adult and further education, science, archives and libraries, media library and documentation, museums and memorials, press, radio, television, new media, marketing and public relations, a consultancy and activities in tourism and management.

For managerial positions or employment in research and teaching, a master’s degree and possibly a doctorate are prerequisites.
