Overview

Working in cross-functional teams, bisociative and lateral thinking, developing workable concepts from creative ideas, organizing yourself in agile project structures, critically evaluating your own results These are the core competencies that graduates of the master’s degree in “Industrial Engineering” acquire within four semesters with the help of the “research-based learning” approach. Current issues at the interfaces between technology and management, between ecology and economy, between digital and real value creation, between today and tomorrow - partly in cooperation with companies and partly with the research institutes of the TH Köln - are taken into account to develop sustainable solutions.

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

The master’s degree builds consecutively on the technical and methodological basic knowledge from the bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering. The focus is on advanced skills for analysis, conception and evaluation, with which the students develop into moderate decision-makers.

As a student, you can choose between the specializations “Technology Management” and “Energy and Resource Management”.

The future “technology managers” expand their technical understanding of the work organization processes in companies and focus in particular on the development and innovation activities for new products and manufacturing processes.

Prospective “energy and resource managers” develop new areas of knowledge in the field of alternative energy generation as well as the recycling of residual and waste materials for circular value creation. These in-depth events mainly take place at the nationwide unique teaching and research location: metabolon. Here, the students have access to systems on a technical and industrial scale for research-based learning (including biogas systems, wood chip heating, process water treatment, various processes for the carbonization of waste).

After successfully completing the master’s degree, as an industrial engineer you will be able to take on management responsibility in an industrial corporate environment or in research institutions. You make moderate decisions about how to deal with new technologies and innovations, keeping an eye on their economic, ecological and social effects and thus contributing to the future-oriented and sustainable development of your organization. Through the study approach of "research-based learning" (according to Huber) you will also be instructed in a special way to work scientifically and thus acquire the methodological requirements for a doctorate.
