Overview

The course offers a great overview and a lot of insight into all relevant areas of renewable energies. The focus is on seeing connections and thinking systemically. Project modules and lectures create a clear technical reference from the first semester on.

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

In 7 semesters to become a professional for renewable energies - in many subject-related modules and projects relating to renewable energies, the course offers the ideal preparation for practical work.

The engineering basics are the focus of the basic course. These include, for example, engineering mathematics, technical mechanics or materials technology. The basic subjects are accompanied by a three-semester lecture in which the students gain an overview of the entire spectrum of renewable energies.

Internship semester

Getting to know the professional experience of an engineer up close - that's what the practical semester is all about. In cooperating companies or other organizations, students are given specific tasks and put the knowledge they have already acquired into practice. Quite a few students combine the 20-week practical phase with a stay abroad.

Main course

In the main course, there is a specialization in all subjects related to renewable energies on the curriculum.

  • Wind energy
This is about the basics of using wind energy. How does a wind turbine work and what components does it consist of? In practical exercises, the students plan wind farms themselves, taking into account financial and legal aspects.
  • Photovoltaics
Photovoltaics deals with the generation of electricity from sunlight with the help of solar cells. The students develop an understanding of the system components of a photovoltaic system and get to know different technologies. Research projects with strong partners such as TÜV Rheinland or the solar module manufacturer Sunpower offer our students practical insights into current issues from research and industry.
  • Bioenergy and regenerative gas technology
The students assess various technical processes and the efficiency of biogas plants and classify them in the renewable energy system by describing the function of the components required for biogas plants, formulating the technical relationships between different plant components for biogas production, the different technologies for providing Explain biomass, conversion of biogas to heat and electricity as well as gas processing and gas feed-in by means of self-research and discussion, carry out and analyze biogas tests including laboratory analysis, as well as calculate energetic, technical and economic key figures in the design and monitoring of biogas plants in order to later determine the use of To be able to plan, evaluate and classify biogas plants for regenerative energy generation.
  • Simulation of energy systems
The students develop their own algorithms for the simulation of simple stationary
electrical or thermal network situations by applying programming
principles and depicting simple energetic relationships in mathematical-physical models in order to carry out valid simulations of energy systems in the further course of their studies and later on the interaction of Competently assess heterogeneous networks and systems of renewable energies.
  • Solar and geothermal energy
The field of solar and geothermal energy deals with the use of solar energy to generate heat. The contents of the subject range from technologies of solar thermal collectors to near-surface geothermal energy to large-scale solar thermal power plants.
  • Energy storage, system technology & grids
In the energy storage and grids department, students deal with the importance of energy storage systems for electrical distribution grids. You will get to know different storage technologies such as batteries, fuel cells or storage power plants.

CAREER PROSPECTS

The forthcoming restructuring of the energy supply system will also create numerous new jobs in the areas of grid expansion, energy storage, smart grids and load management.

  • System planning and project
planning The system planning and project planning of wind parks, solar parks, biogas power plants or thermal solar power plants encompasses a wide range of tasks. The tasks range from project acquisition and the creation of wind and solar reports for specific locations to the planning and implementation of complete systems (construction planning and construction supervision). The processing of approval processes and negotiations with project partners and suppliers are also part of the work. Employers are planning offices and energy supply companies.
  • Development of components and systems
Development engineers work for one of the numerous manufacturers of systems or system components. This can include gearboxes for wind turbines or inverters for photovoltaic systems, but also mini-CHP units or pellet boilers.
In this area, engineers deal with further technical development, plan manufacturing processes or market technical products and services.
  • Energy consultancy
The job profile of energy consultants is diverse: They work for energy suppliers or municipal utilities, for consumer centers, industrial companies or for electrical appliance manufacturers. You can also become self-employed as a consultant or appraiser.
The tasks of an energy consultant include determining the energy consumption of a private household, a commercial enterprise or certain electrical devices and advising on ways to save energy. Energy consultants need extensive and up-to-date knowledge of new technologies and funding programs, especially when it comes to energy advice in the field of new construction and building renovation.
  • Development cooperation
In an organization for development cooperation (GIZ), engineers for renewable energies help to establish a sustainable energy supply in developing countries. A typical task is the implementation of a power supply for a school or an orphanage.
