Then you have come to the right place in the Renewable Energies Masters course. The course is offered at the newly founded Cologne Institute for Renewable Energy of the Faculty for Plants, Energy and Machine Systems with the support of the Faculty for Information, Media and Electrical Engineering and the Institute for Technology in the Tropics.


The Master in Renewable Energies takes 3 semesters. You can start your studies in both winter and summer semesters.

During the first two semesters, the German and partly English-language modules deepen the content and methodology of engineering knowledge of renewable energy technologies.

The master's project runs over two semesters. The students prepare a scientific publication in English on their research project. The course is completed in the third semester with the master's thesis and colloquium.

Cooperation with companies, in research projects of the institute or in international projects is possible.

Targeted specialization can take place through elective modules. There are specializations in the areas of energy efficiency, energy storage, biomass and photovoltaics.

A practical environment is created by means of seminar lessons, exercises, lectures and project work within the framework of the individual modules. Here the students develop their knowledge of teamwork, project planning and presentation. Each semester there is a project week in which the students deal exclusively with their projects.


Graduates of this master’s degree will find a wide field of activity in the newly created professional environment of "renewable energies". Potential employers are engineering offices, public utilities, production plant and component manufacturers, energy plant operators, energy suppliers, energy consulting companies, system and component providers. Authorities and public research institutions are also increasingly looking for well-trained graduates with in-depth specialist knowledge in "renewable energies".

In this context, it is also important that the course guarantees the professional qualification for a doctorate in the relevant field of "renewable energies".

Future activities:

Your possible future activities include research and development, product development in companies, technical sales, project and quality management, product management, process control, energy consulting and system simulation. The most important areas of activity are exemplarily outlined in the overview. 

On the manufacturer's side:

  • Development and production of components and systems
  • Technical development
  • Technical purchasing of components
  • quality assurance
  • Technical Sales

On the investor and operator side:

  • Development, construction and operation of systems (e.g. wind parks, solar parks, biomass, power plants)
  • Screening and development of sites
  • Preparation of wind / solar reports for locations
  • Planning of systems and wind solar parks with several individual systems
  • Implementation of approval processes and grid connection procedures
  • Tendering and procurement of system components
  • Certification and quality management
