Pedagogy and Management in Social Work is a consecutive Master’s degree in Social Work that is offered at the Faculty of Applied Social Sciences at the TH Köln. It is a theory and research-led Master in Social Work. The disciplinary assignment to the science of social work is thus constitutive.
With its reference to the concept of pedagogy, the master's degree in social work also marks the orientation towards the traditional strand of social pedagogy and its topics and discourses. On the other hand, the term refers to discourses on educational theory and appropriate university didactics.
The orientation towards a broad management concept reveals organizational sociological and psychological perspectives, socio-political frameworks and the reference to discourses and competencies in social management.
The course qualifies for research activities, for coordination and development tasks and, with increasing professional experience, for managerial tasks in social work.
The course enables graduates to work independently on the basis of scientific knowledge and methods, theoretical reflections and research experience, both in a technical, conceptual and research-oriented manner, as well as in terms of management skills.
To this end, the course conveys the state of research in the areas of social work, social management and pedagogy and is theory and research-oriented. The students learn to scientifically work on complex problems from practice and research. The aim is to introduce students to independent research and theoretical work. Furthermore, the structure of the course follows the approach that management functions in social work require specialist expertise in addition to competencies in social management.
