Overview

The rescue engineering bachelor's degree offers the necessary specialist knowledge on the basis of basic technical training in order to be able to develop innovative and efficient concepts for preventive and operational hazard prevention and safety technology. Due to the two fields of study rescue engineering and fire protection engineering, there is already the possibility of specialization from the 4th semester

During your studies, you will deal with all kinds of dangers and their causes. Depending on the chosen field of study, you deepen this in the area of ??fire protection or hazard prevention. You will learn in lectures and projects, using the scientific and technical basics imparted at the beginning of your studies, to recognize, assess and prevent dangers and risks and how to combat them with active measures.

As generalists, our graduates are in demand in the public sector by fire and rescue services as well as in the private sector when it comes to the safety of companies, factories, critical infrastructures or safety assessments of plants. Thanks to the interdisciplinary training, rescue engineers are often employed in a coordinating role, but they also impress with their technical safety expertise.

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

In 7 semesters to become a professional for security and hazard prevention - in many subject-related modules and projects on the topics of security, hazard prevention and risk management, the course offers the ideal preparation for your work in practice.

In the basic course, the content-related focus of the course is on the basics of natural science and engineering. These include, for example, mathematics, technical mechanics, physics, chemistry or materials technology.

The basic subjects are accompanied by a variety of projects and lectures with content on security, hazard prevention and risk analysis as well as specific specialist knowledge from the fields of law, business administration and management. After completing the basic course, students choose one of the two fields of study rescue engineering or fire protection engineering.

Getting to know the professional experience of a rescue engineer up close - that's what the practical semester is all about. In cooperating companies or other organizations, students are given specific tasks and put the knowledge they have already acquired into practice in their own projects. Quite a few students combine the 20-week practical phase with a stay abroad.

In the main course there is a deepening of the content in all subjects related to the areas of hazard prevention and fire protection on the curriculum. For this purpose, the students can choose between the two fields of study rescue engineering and fire protection engineering.

  • Rescue engineering

In the Rescue Engineering course, students learn to safely recognize and assess dangers of different origins or causes. In addition to atomic, biological and chemical hazards, this also includes technical hazards. In addition, the students receive specialist knowledge of technical tools and organizational measures to contain and combat dangers. In addition, the students acquire competencies in the fields of "operational hazard prevention", "economics" and "humanities and social sciences".

  • Fire protection engineering

The focus of the fire protection engineering course is on hazard prevention. The courses focus on the areas of “fire protection concepts, civil protection”, “fire protection measures, plant and occupational safety” and “hazards and risk analyzes”.

CAREER PROSPECTS

In the area of ??non-police security and security, with the elements of operational security, preventive security and security technology, there are a number of technical, medical and organizational tasks. At the same time, the requirements for quality and economy are growing rapidly. Due to financial constraints and critical resources, appropriate solutions must be designed efficiently.

Increasing complexity, economic constraints and time-critical problems require interdisciplinary and comprehensive training for personnel in hazard prevention. The Rescue Engineering course takes these requirements into account. The highly qualified managers of the future are sustainably trained at the TH Köln.

The fields of action of the Rescue Engineering course can be subdivided into the three higher-level areas of "operational hazard prevention", "preventive hazard prevention" and "safety technology". Together, these areas map all subject areas that are necessary for the general field of action “hazard prevention and security”.

Operational security:

Thanks to their knowledge of hazard prevention, the graduates develop new concepts for defensive fire protection, rescue services or disaster control. They also hold managerial positions and use their skills in the areas of personnel management, business administration and accounting.
In the area of ??operational hazard prevention, graduates of the Rescue Engineering course can also be assigned to authorities and organizations with safety tasks (BOS) in management positions in emergency operations.

Preventive security:

The combination of engineering training and existing knowledge of hazards and their effects enable graduates to evaluate protected assets and defense measures. In the area of ??fire and environmental protection, they identify possible risks and develop measures that lead to risk minimization or efficient management of a damaging event. Accordingly, they are able to deal with risks as efficiently as possible and to limit them to the minimum possible in order to guarantee the protection of people and their property and to reduce economic damage.

Security technology:

In order to be able to minimize risks, it may be necessary, in addition to organizational measures, to assess the effects scientifically and to derive appropriate technical measures. The effects of incidents in process plants or other comparable facilities are modeled and calculated by the graduates of the Rescue Engineering course. You will design technical measures to avoid damage to systems or to minimize the effects of incidents.
