In the main course, the students specialize in one of the five fields of study construction, geotechnical engineering, structural engineering, transport or water management; the main fields of activity of civil engineers.
The greater Cologne area offers students a particularly lively environment: many construction companies and numerous engineering offices offer the opportunity to work alongside their studies and to gain initial practical experience. A special feature of the bachelor's degree in civil engineering: it can also be completed as a dual degree with integrated vocational training.
The mathematical, scientific and technical basics are taught in the basic course. Accordingly, subjects such as mathematics, mechanics, building informatics, building materials science or building physics are on the curriculum. But also engineering basics on building law, construction operations, geotechnics, structural engineering and structural engineering are part of the basic course.
In the main course, students choose one of five fields of study.
- Construction Management
Students who choose construction management deal, for example, with construction management, building regulations and contract law, engineering surveying and safety technology in their main course.
The geotechnical field of study includes, among other things, the subjects of rock mechanics, tunnel construction, earthworks and dam construction and municipal civil engineering.
- Structural engineering The structural engineering
specialization includes structural engineering, solid construction, steel construction, timber construction, but also heat and fire protection on the study program.
- Transportation The
content of the Transportation Engineering course includes subjects such as railway construction, public transportation systems, road construction and transportation planning.
- Water management
The students in the water management department deal with wastewater treatment, hydraulics and water supply, among other things.
Civil engineers are in demand above all in engineering offices, construction companies, associations, state and municipal building, traffic and environmental administrations as well as in planning, construction and operating departments of private companies. As managers, they plan, organize the plant operation or exercise construction management. The most important areas of activity for civil engineers can be found in the main courses of study.
- Construction Operations
Civil engineers specializing in construction operations carry out structural, engineering and civil engineering projects. For example, you have to prepare and draw up construction contracts, determine construction prices and take over the technical, organizational and economic construction management.
Geotechnicians plan and build in the ground or with the ground as a building material. The areas of responsibility include, among other things, the foundation of structures, the securing of construction pits and the construction of tunnels and dams. You will safely apply the construction methods of geotechnical engineering and make geological calculations.
- Structural engineering
Graduates of the structural engineering course plan, design and calculate the supporting structures for residential and commercial buildings, industrial buildings, sports facilities, traffic structures and infrastructure structures.
Transport planners and engineers plan transport networks, develop transport and mobility concepts, plan, evaluate, design, build, maintain and operate transport facilities. You are involved in project development, project management, construction, material testing and maintenance of traffic systems. They are also increasingly evaluating traffic systems according to how they affect traffic quality and traffic safety, the natural and built environment, and mobility and traffic management.
- Water management
The fields of activity in water management range from water supply and wastewater drainage and purification to constructive hydraulic engineering with dams, retention basins, waterways and hydropower plants to the natural remodeling of flowing waters.
