The research master’s degree will train you to become an applied researcher in data science. To this end, the following study objectives are achieved:

  • Mastery of data mining methods and algorithms for processing, analyzing and making use of large amounts of data
  • Ability to use machine learning algorithms to develop decision support systems based on large amounts of data
  • In-depth competencies in the development of autonomous software agents based on artificial intelligence
  • Construction, configuration and use of big data architectures for batch and stream processing such as Apache Hadoop and Spark
  •  Mastery of functional programming with Python
  • Ability to do independent, applied scientific work in interdisciplinary project teams including the preparation of research exposés, the preparation of a scientific publication and the discussion and defense of one's own results in a plenary session
  • Mastery of agile project management for employees under the guidance of innovative project teams
  • Ability to reflect on one's own work, especially against the background of the limits of scientific knowledge and ethical considerations


In this innovative project-based course, you will be trained to become a data scientist as part of your practical work. You apply for a research project before the start of your studies and work on it under close supervision by proven experts throughout the entire master’s program. This enables you to apply the basic knowledge you have learned directly in practice and thus to internalize it in the long term. A research master's degree in data science trains engineers for a career in applied science as well as for a professional future in industry.

Data science is one of the most important disciplines of the digital age. Almost all objects and processes in the physical world are gradually being mapped into the digital world: Internet-of-Things, Industry 4.0, Big Data and social media are just a few of the many trends that describe this process.

Digital twins are emerging that store unimaginable amounts of data and make them available. Artificial intelligence and learning machines use this data and will fundamentally change the world in which we live and work. As a data scientist, you will actively help shape this digital revolution.

You will design machine learning processes to recognize patterns in data, analyze images and sound recordings and develop decision support systems on this basis. In addition, you will develop autonomously acting robots and software bots with the help of artificial intelligence.

As an expert in data science, you can currently choose your employer anywhere in the world! After completing your degree, you have three basic career paths:

  • Careers in applied science
    Work as a research assistant in applied research at universities, technical colleges or public research institutes and do your doctorate in the context of an application-oriented dissertation; this can also be carried out in cooperation with a company
  •  Career in industry
    As a data scientist, shape the digitization area of ??your company in a leading role. Work in research and development and in a leading role create the company's new digital services together with a team
  • Set up your own start-up
    Based on your research results during your studies and together with fellow students, you can set up your own digital company with optional support from the university of applied sciences
