Overview

Graduates of the master’s degree in business informatics are able to:

  • apply their in-depth technical knowledge to tasks in the modern IT world of work,
  • To bring problem-solving skills to scientific research projects in order to gain new knowledge or to develop new processes and
  • to act strategically, responsibly and creatively in consulting and management functions in complex projects, institutions and companies.

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

1st semester
Business application systems imparts knowledge and skills in capturing the application system architecture as a company-wide "development plan", getting to know the basics of business application systems and their classification.

Business models and processes in the netEconomy deals with fundamental subjects and terms of the eBusiness and the netEconomy of each other, the critical evaluation of risks and opportunities of the eBusiness as well as the implementation and adaptation of concepts of the netEconomy to internal processes.

Business process management is used to convey knowledge about basic terms of business process management, whose methods and techniques, such as process modeling tools, are to be used in an operational environment.

Data Management teaches students to deal with terms and objects of business itelligence and tools. Data warehousing phases are explained and multidimensional database schemes are created. Students identify specific knowledge problems in organizations, can classify them thematically and develop application scenarios.

Business simulation deals with mastering the holistic experience and recognition of business contexts. Students learn to define and pursue strategies, goals and concrete measures to secure the competitiveness of a company in a dynamic environment.

2nd semester
Consulting and Strategic Management
Students acquire knowledge of the central concepts of consulting, strategic management as well as the tools and frameworks that are typically used in consulting projects in the business and IT sector and can apply them independently.

Management of IT projects imparts knowledge about preparing, planning and executing IT projects as well as dealing with clients, project team members and other stakeholders, mastering project crises and moderating differences of opinion. Skills are acquired to evaluate, prepare and carry out IT implementation projects with regard to technical, economic and social aspects.

IT law imparts knowledge of the basics of German contract law, including the basics of the law of general terms and conditions. Simple contracts including general terms and conditions are analyzed and the special features of contracts in electronic business transactions are evaluated.

Research seminar on business
informatics Students learn to work up a research-oriented question of business informatics, to present it in writing and to present it to a specialist audience. You use research methods from business informatics and can assess their meaningful application. This includes classifying a question in the scientific context, designing an appropriate structure and applying the rules of scientific writing comprehensively.

3rd semester
Master's project on business informatics enables students to work in a project-related and target-oriented manner. You have mastered project management with regard to economic and social aspects, have the skills for well-founded dissemination, coordination, communication and enforcement of decisions and have advisory and key competencies.

IT governance, compliance and security enable students to obtain information on topics that have not yet found their way into the specialist literature. For this purpose, the students collect materials and extract the essential information. Based on the knowledge gained, they define a well-founded opinion on the topic in order to derive the necessary consequences for IT security and IT organization.

IT service management provides knowledge of how to differentiate IT operations and IT services from other operational IT activities and a comprehensive understanding of the fields of application, processes, roles and functions of IT service management (ITSM).

4th semester
Master's thesis and colloquium
Students work independently on a complex problem from the field of business informatics using scientific methods within a specified period. You can document scientific work and, if necessary, other results such as source text in written form as well as verbally present the initial situation, the procedure and the result of the problem processing and successfully participate in a discussion.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Completed bachelor's degree in business informatics or a related degree with the following characteristics:

  • 25 ECTS in business administration
  • 10 ETCS in mathematics
  • 45 ECTS in computer science or business informatics (including 10 application systems, 20 software technology)
  • At least grade 2.8 or ECTS grade C
  • Missing ECTS in one area can be made up for an MA thesis up to an amount of 18 ECTS.

Business IT specialists are highly sought-after specialists both nationally and internationally. They play a key role in the economic success of many companies. Her tasks include the planning, development and operation of information and communication systems, which are nowadays an indispensable basis for efficient work in a company. In principle, their area of ??application is industry-independent and diverse.

The field of activity for business informatics graduates is very broad. As a generalist, you often take on management tasks and, in addition to system analysis and software development, take care of project coordination, training, consulting and sales.
