The theoretical part of the training includes modules from midwifery studies, medicine and other related disciplines such as psychology and ethics. The practical modules deal specifically with pregnancy and childbirth, the puerperium and breastfeeding and freelance midwifery work.
In order to meet the complex requirements of the profession, the students learn the basics of original midwifery activities through theoretical content and practical studies. In addition to a high level of professional competence, they acquire the ability to reflect critically and to base their actions on a scientific basis. In this way, they are prepared to act responsibly and in accordance with the situation and are able to actively shape and promote health resources in families.
In seven semesters, the course offers a change from theoretical learning in the university and practical learning in the obstetric departments of the clinics with which the Practice Centers for Applied Midwifery Science (PZHW) in Minden and Paderborn cooperate. The teaching is largely provided in the form of seminars and practical exercises in the skills lab. As part of the regular practice modules, theoretical knowledge and operational practice are linked. The course concludes with the maternity care examination and the bachelor's thesis in the seventh semester.
Abitur or advanced technical college entrance qualification or an equivalent recognized previous education and contract with one of the two cooperating practice centers for applied midwifery science (PZHW) in Paderborn or Minden. The work of midwives takes place in different settings: in clinical or domestic settings, in midwifery practices or birthing centers. In all settings there is the option of being employed or freelance.
