Overview

The aim of the three-semester course is to expand clinical and scientific skills in the field of optometry. Graduates should be enabled to provide optometric care for customers and patients with special visual disorders or needs as well as to transfer scientific knowledge into professional practice.

The course consists of 14 modules with a total of around 750 hours of attendance, of which around 60% are lectures and 40% are laboratory exercises or clinical internships. In these modules, students acquire knowledge of special technologies and examination procedures, try them out, examine people with visual impairments and provide them with visual aids, work on case studies or deal with the planning, implementation and presentation of their own scientific study. In addition, they spend time more flexible self-study so that part-time work outside of the university can be taken up if necessary.

The modules are tailored to both the knowledge acquired in a bachelor's degree in ophthalmic optics / optometry and the general conditions for professional practice in Germany and Europe.

  • In the child optometry module, procedures and behavior for examining small patients are learned and tested in clinical internships. ????
  • In the advanced contact lens fitting module, skills for fitting presbyopia, keratoconus and other special lenses are taught.
  • ???? In the supply and support module for the visually impaired, total solutions for the visually impaired are developed and trend-setting institutions for visually impaired care are visited. ????
  • The Alternative Optometric Strategies module examines alternative methods of identifying and correcting anomalies, including those of the convergence and accommodation system. ????
  • In the neuro-optometry module a deeper understanding of the ocular effects of neurological diseases is acquired.
  • ???? In the module clinical optometry for advanced users, patients with visual problems are examined and, if necessary, a visual aid is prescribed.
  • ???? In the orthoptics and pleoptics module, special knowledge is imparted on the examination and treatment of disorders of binocular vision. ????
  • The module Co-Management in Ocular Surgery prepares students for activities that can be carried out by optometrists before, during and after surgical measures on the eye. ????
  • In the Medical Lasers module, students get to know how medical lasers work and important areas of application.
  • ???? The clinical research module deepens the knowledge of the organization, implementation and presentation of scientific studies and prepares students for the master's thesis at the same time.
  • ???? In the compulsory elective module I, students can choose a combination of two internships, in which mostly people with a need for a special visual aid are optometrically examined and cared for.
  • ???? In the final examination module, students plan a scientific study, collect the necessary data on test subjects or in a laboratory, evaluate them statistically and present the results.

PRACTICAL RELEVANCE

Both the course content and the teaching staff, who are qualified for teaching through one or more university degrees, prepare students specifically for the application of optometry in professional practice. In addition to the professors of the university, lecturers who practice the profession of optician or a related profession and who have special knowledge and professional experience teach.

The numerous clinical internships in which the students acquire skills for communication, for professional examination, for documentation, for clinical decision-making and for the provision of visual aids under almost real practical conditions are to be emphasized.

 

RESEARCH 

 

For the scientific work to be carried out, both university-internal research projects and cooperation projects with industrial companies or with medical institutions come into question.

Projects carried out in-house at the university often include examinations of measuring devices or medical products such as eyeglass lenses, contact lenses, care products or magnifying visual aids. Cooperation projects often include examinations on external test subjects, often with the aid of modern measuring devices or imaging examination methods.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

  • Applicants with a bachelor's degree in optics / optometry or a comparable university degree. The university decides on the equivalence of courses of study with names other than the above-mentioned Bachelor.
  • An applicant for a master’s degree who cannot submit a certificate of the first academic degree by the application deadline, but is already admitted to the final examination or thesis, can apply with proof of performance for all study achievements made so far (exception rule).
  • If the certificate is not yet available at the time of enrollment, enrollment is subject to revocation.
  • Applicants who make use of the exception rule will be admitted if they meet the other admission requirements with the condition that they submit the missing certificate in the first semester by June 20 or January 20.

 

CAREER PROSPECTS

The course qualifies graduates for jobs in ophthalmic or ophthalmic facilities in which extended or special services are provided. Successful graduation facilitates access to senior positions in specialist optical stores, in the optical industry or in teaching and is at the same time the prerequisite for taking up a doctoral degree at a university in Germany or abroad. However, it is not associated with any special professional rights.
