Overview

Increasing requirements for new construction, renovation, environmental protection, recycling and the use of residual materials require specialists who develop, test and implement tailor-made solutions for building materials. For civil engineers, this means thinking beyond the limits of their traditional discipline and acquiring expert knowledge in the field of materials science. The "Building Materials Engineering" course, which is unique in Germany, provides you with the relevant know-how:

The master’s degree is completed after four semesters of standard study time with the academic degree “Master of Science” (M.Sc.). It is aimed at those who have already acquired their first professional university degree in civil engineering or in another engineering or applied natural science and would like to further develop their specialist and methodological skills in the field of building materials and renovation.

Our graduates are qualified for demanding engineering jobs in managerial positions in testing, research and development tasks for existing and new buildings. The intensively supervised and practice-oriented course enables you, as a building materials engineer, to fill interface positions in companies, institutes and planning offices and to actively promote future-oriented solutions for resource-saving and sustainable construction.  

 

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

The focus of the "Building Materials Engineering" course is the holistic examination of the properties, manufacture and use of building materials. The aim is to train engineers who independently develop multifunctional materials and tailor-made building materials for modern, sustainable engineering structures and historic buildings and their renovation, and who can safely classify and repair material-related structural damage.  

Both engineering and natural science-oriented content are taught: starting with the basics of general materials science, through the characterization of building materials, the interaction between the structure and properties of building materials and materials to the diagnosis of structural damage and the possibilities of repair and renovation. In addition, you will deal with raw material resources and the possibilities of building material recycling. 

The lectures are supplemented by exercises and project work, in which skills in dealing with test and analysis procedures are imparted. In our well-equipped building materials, chemistry and physics laboratories, you analyze and test building materials for the most part independently. 

In order to further sharpen your individual profile, take various elective modules depending on your interests. Here you can draw from the pool of the Bauhaus University Weimar and, for example, complete subjects in structural engineering, construction management, architecture or environmental engineering; A foreign language course is also possible. With the final master's thesis, you document your ability to work scientifically on the current state of building research. 

 

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

In order to be admitted to the master's degree in “Building Materials Engineering”, you must have a first academic degree in civil engineering, environmental engineering or materials science, a related or other technical or applied scientific degree. This first academic degree can be a Bachelor, Master or a diploma that you have acquired at a university, technical college or professional academy. As a rule, the degree should be "good".

Material and / or renovation-related knowledge already acquired during the course is an advantage. Due to the Germany-wide uniqueness of the master’s degree, subject-specific requirements are issued for skills adjustment for a bachelor’s degree without advanced knowledge of building materials (also for B.Sc. civil engineering with a different specialization). They can be fully recognized as an optional subject, so that no additional time is required.

The examination of the content requirements is carried out by the examination board of the Faculty of Civil Engineering. The application documents are reviewed to determine whether the knowledge you have already acquired meets the subject-specific requirements of the master’s course you are aiming for. For this purpose, the examination board will assess your submitted application documents on the basis of the assessment of the academic advisor.

 

CAREER PROSPECTS

The focus on "building materials engineering" or "building materials and renovation" prepares people in civil engineering for planning, executing and building expert activities in new construction, maintenance and renovation of buildings. As an expert in materials science in construction, you will occupy interfaces in companies, institutes and planning offices. The degree enables you to take on testing, research and development tasks in a managerial position. This also includes the management of concrete construction sites in structural and civil engineering, the planning and implementation of conversion measures and repairs, as well as activities with regard to resource-efficient and permanent construction, on thermal and fire protection expansion with suitable materials and with a view to ecological construction taking into account the life cycle and recyclability. This includes instructing employees as well as developing, implementing and monitoring projects and writing research and test reports.

A successful, above-average completion of the master’s degree is the prerequisite for admission to a doctorate or an international Ph.D. program.
