Overview

Are you interested in the interfaces between spatial and social decisions? Are you wondering how the protection of landscapes can be combined with the economic development of a country? Or are you looking for answers to social and environmental questions about the quality of life in cities in Europe and worldwide? Are you ready to get involved in other areas such as technical, design and political areas? Do you want to work in an interdisciplinary manner and mediate between conflicting interests without losing sight of what is justifiable or even essential for the city and society? Then come to Weimar.

A core aspect of the training in the Urban Studies course is the intensive support provided by professorships in the areas of urban planning, spatial planning and spatial research, monument preservation and building history, social-scientific urban research as well as architecture and urban development. We therefore use the proximity to the renowned architecture training at our faculty to provide future urbanists with a solid approach to assessing structural and spatial structures as well as a trained understanding of design issues. The two bachelor's degree courses in architecture and urban studies are coordinated, which enables collaboration between architects and urbanists of the same age group. This is in the bachelor's degree in Urban Studies in the subjects of urban design, history, monument preservation, urban sociology,

Another quality feature of the Urban Studies bachelor's degree is its university character, which introduces research as an essential qualification feature. This scientific character of the training represents the best prerequisites for a demanding later position, also in practical work. It can be continued in a qualified occupation in the professional field, in the consecutive master's degree in urban studies, in postgraduate master's courses and in one of our Ph. Find D. programs.

The standard period of study is eight semesters. The coursework and examinations to be performed are regulated in the curriculum and in the catalog of services in the study and examination regulations for the Urban Studies Bachelor’s course.

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

The aim of the course is to acquire basic planning qualifications. In the project-oriented training, the social and planning science subjects, as well as the structural-spatial subjects, are given greater weight in accordance with the profile of the urban planner. In addition to the planning project, social science, design or planning-political fundamentals are conveyed in accompanying compulsory, elective and elective modules.

The course is based on five pillars:

1. an outstanding curricular position of the planning and social science content

2. A strong emphasis on the development of an urban morphological, analytical and design understanding as well as design skills in the curriculum, which lead to urban design and the working methods of architects

3. an outstanding internationality; A stay abroad as a compulsory part of the course for all foreign students

4. the eight-semester study period, which enables a professional bachelor's degree, which is recognized by the Chamber of Architects in order to be registered as a town planner according to the required professional experience

5. a personal study atmosphere

The training corresponds to the necessary breadth of the planning profession. Eight semesters are required for this demanding qualification. The core subjects introduce students to the dimensions of social activity that are indispensable for practicing the profession and for relevant scientific research:

_ Urban planning and supra-local planning through to spatial planning

_ Theory and history of the city, spatial planning and planning policy

_ Urban development, housing and the preservation of urban monuments

_ Urban research, spatial research and urban sociology

_ Economic and urban basics of spatial planning

_ Open space planning and public space

_ Law, planning for different social groups

The language of instruction is German. A semester abroad at a partner university is planned in the 5th or 6th semester, and an internship abroad in the 6th semester. In addition, a 10-week job-related internship in Germany must be completed before registering for the thesis.

Every student should deal intensively with the German planning culture during their internship in Germany and apply what they have learned in independent projects. We recommend internships in institutions of urban and regional planning or related offices, both in the public and in the non-public sector, for example in private planning offices, non-governmental or research institutions.

After completing and defending the thesis, the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism awards the academic degree "Bachelor of Science" (B. Sc.).
