The study structure of the modularized study programs for teaching at grammar schools: art education in two-subject studies and dual subject art education is characterized in a special way by its project orientation, which in addition to the ability to self-organize promotes the ability to reflect, the ability to cooperate and research-oriented work.

In addition to the equal integration of student teachers in the projects of  fine art ,  product design , visual communication  and media art / media design ,    references to school and extracurricular art-mediating contexts are made throughout the course of the course, which are in continuous cooperation with the Klassik Stiftung Weimar and the Faculty of Architecture be expressed in the field of  architecture and school  .

The integration of a practical semester based on the Jena model promotes intensive school contact at an early stage. In addition to dual training, it is also possible to study dual subjects at the Bauhaus University Weimar. In addition, in cooperation with the Liszt School of Music Weimar, the subject combination of teaching at grammar schools can be studied in art and music. Another second subject and educational sciences are studied at the  Friedrich Schiller University Jena .

In addition to specialist knowledge in the areas of history and theory of art, design, visual communication and aesthetics, specialist didactic, methodological and applied developmental psychological knowledge are conveyed. An essential part of the course is the artistic and creative basics and applications. A central aim of the course leads to the realization that the professional self-image of art education should be understood as individually and continuously in development. The development of a personal artistic or creative expression, The ability to deal with different materials and techniques in the workshops of the faculty as well as the ability to critically reflect on one's own artistic or creative process as well as the art-mediating action are essential skills that are promoted in the course of the course. Within the framework of didactic modules, the focus is on the ability to act and interpret theory-led, cooperation and innovation.


The course comprises a standard period of study of 10 semesters, which includes two examination and one practical semester. The acquisition of study achievements is planned within the first 9 semesters. Due to the high work intensity, it is recommended to attend one project module or two specialist modules per semester. The exam exams are taken during the course.

The course can be started in the winter semester of each year and ends with the first state examination for teaching at grammar schools, art education in dual or dual art education. These qualifications qualify for preparatory service and later work as an art teacher at grammar schools and community schools. At the same time, qualifications are provided for related professions such as art mediator in extracurricular and museum educational institutions. In addition, through the course of study, the requirements for a doctorate in the field of art didactics or as part of the Ph.D. doctoral program at the Faculty of Design are acquired.



You should have a fundamental openness towards experimental forms of creative and artistic teaching as well as reflective analysis of your own work process. The relation to school practice is required as well as the proximity to the current art development. Creativity, independence, linguistic expressiveness and flexibility are necessary competencies for a successful degree. In order to cope with the study requirements, it is important to develop an artistic identity as well as an art-pedagogical habitus. Studying at two study locations requires a high degree of organizational skills in creating the curriculum and the willingness to interdisciplinary networking of acquired knowledge and skills.
