Overview

By teaching important psychological models of experience and behavior, students acquire fundamental knowledge, skills and abilities in scientifically founded psychology. You get to know theories and research questions and can apply them to selected examples from the respective subject area. The basics of empiricism are also acquired so that psychological experiments can be planned, carried out and statistically evaluated.

The knowledge acquired enables students to work primarily in the areas of diagnostics, advice, evaluation and research. This includes professions with primarily diagnostic and advisory tasks in health and social services, in education and training, in administration, business and industry and for activities in the context of scientific investigations as well as for tasks in the context of professional training, further education and training. Possible occupational fields include activities in human resources, health education and schooling, consulting activities in the educational field as well as in the clinical and work psychological environment and also in the field of surveys and market research.

In essence, skills are also acquired that qualify for further courses of study leading to a master’s degree or doctorate, especially in psychological subjects. It is a polyvalent bachelor's degree , which - if suitable modules are selected (see below) - is a prerequisite for a master’s degree in clinical psychology and psychotherapy and the later granting of a license to practice as a psychotherapist.

The 5th or 6th semester is particularly suitable for studying at a university abroad.

What distinguishes the study of psychology at the HU?

Psychology has a long tradition at the Humboldt University. Internationally renowned scientists such as Hermann Ebbinghaus, Wolfgang Köhler, Kurt Lewin and Friedhart Klix taught here. The institute is currently very well staffed with 14 professorships. This means that there is a favorable ratio between the number of employees and the number of students. A strong scientific orientation of psychology at the HU has developed from the aforementioned tradition. This is expressed in favoring empirical or experimental investigation techniques or in the question of the physiological basis of psychological processes or psychological illnesses. From this tradition, the main focus areas are clinical psychology, cognitive and biological psychology, work, Industrial and organizational psychology as well as personality and development psychology. The practice of Humboldt's principle of the unity of teaching and research should be emphasized. The students are actively involved in research in various courses from the first year of study. Another important feature of the institute is the establishment of a very active student body (Fachschaft Psychologie), which is committed to the interests of the students.
