Overview

The bachelor's degree in geography offers an integrated, balanced study of the fundamentals of physical geography and human geography with a subsequent focus on one of the two sub-disciplines. In addition to imparting theories in lectures and accompanying seminars, a wide range of procedures and empirical working methods are taught. The following competencies should be achieved in the specialist course:

  • Knowledge of current views on the self-understanding of geography and its role in contemporary society, the fundamentals of the history of geography, the basic geographic facts and processes, current research focuses in the sub-areas of physical geography, human geography and the overlapping areas of both, via basic spatial content Fields of application of geography, interdisciplinary or transdisciplinary references to geography, development, interdependence and problems of geographical areas of different scales, fundamental subject-specific methods and work techniques,
  • the ability to acquire, process, evaluate, assess and present information and data, to create a structured, media-supported, technical terminology-safe argumentation and presentation, to reflect on social and personal values ??and their relationship to one another, to think in alternatives, to weigh up different points of view and for forming one's own judgment, for communication and cooperation.

Geography is the ideal subject for all those who do not want to study either pure natural sciences or pure humanities. But also for those who are interested in understanding, analyzing and finding solutions to complex human-environment relationships. Geographers deal with the components of nature - soils, climate, water cycle, flora and fauna. But at the same time they are interested in the population development in Germany and around the world, the economic networking in the area, in megacities with more than 10 million inhabitants or in the consumer behavior of people. Global questions like: "Can we feed 9 billion people in the near future?" Or: "

Due to the diversity of the subject geography and its interdisciplinarity, study projects in the team, internships, technical-methodical special courses in geomatics and computer modeling as well as excursions are part of modern training at the HU.
