The master's degree in Media Culture Analysis: Theater and Media Cultures in Transnational Space, funded by the Franco-German University (DFH), is research and practice-oriented and provides students with comprehensive knowledge and analytical skills in the field of comparative and transcultural media and cultural analysis. It builds on a previous successful bachelor's degree and is transnational and bilingual (German-French) through two integrated semester stays at the cooperating European universities of Vienna and Nantes. The four-semester course ends with a Master of Arts (MA) and a double diploma recognized by the Franco-German university. It is free of admission with "Proof of special suitability" (Application and aptitude assessment are made directly at Heinrich Heine University). It is only possible to start studies in the winter semester.

The four-semester interdisciplinary master's degree in Media Culture Analysis: Theater and Media Cultures in Transnational Space is both research and practice-oriented. On the one hand, it is aimed at those who have completed their first degree in a media or cultural studies subject and would like to deepen their knowledge and research. On the other hand, to prospective students who would like to acquire skills in the field of transcultural media and cultural work. 

The key question is what significance the media have in the dynamic processes of forming and developing different cultures. How do media shape the perception of the individual, his way of understanding himself and relating to others? How do they shape the processes of communication and meaning and how do they shape cultural, social and political institutions? These questions were grouped into study modules.

In the first two semesters, the modules “Perception”, “Representation” and “Production” convey basic knowledge about the relationship between media, subjectivity and culture. This is followed in the second and third semesters by the modules "Comparative Media Culture Research" and "Audiovisual Culture". In the course Media Culture Analysis in Transcultural Space, the content is covered and expanded by the courses offered by the Universities of Vienna and Nantes Vienna focuses on processes of subjectification and different (media) cultures of theater. The modules in Nantes are dedicated to the epistemes of translation, cultural sociology and the intercultural transfer processes between the arts - with special consideration of the Franco-German area. The aim of the interdisciplinary and intercultural course is to make the complex relationship between media and cultures transparent and to enable graduates, by imparting knowledge and analytical and creative skills, to make future decisions in professional life taking this complexity into account and creatively to act.


The course in media culture analysis is designed for four semesters and, after an introduction in the first semester, is divided into five thematic modules of 6 hours per week each, each of which ends with a final examination. The central component of the course is a practical team project / internship (e.g. proofreading, translation, film, blog, podcast, website, exhibition concept, audio or performative project) and the preparation of the master’s thesis. Students of the trinational master's degree in media culture analysis spend the first semester together in Düsseldorf, the second in Vienna, the third in Nantes and the fourth optionally at one of the three locations. The alternating study locations allow experience in the different national university cultures to be gained and European exchange to be promoted. The languages ??of instruction are German and French; the exchange is funded by the Franco-German University (DFH). 


The entry requirement is a media or media culture studies or a related subject that was completed with a grade of at least 2.4 and in which a total of at least 90 CP were acquired that are subject-specific. They should come from the following areas:
1. Theory and history of the media
2. Theory and history of culture
3. Aesthetic theory or theories and history of perception?
Prerequisites are still knowledge of French or German (at least level C1). A suitability assessment is carried out by a specialist commission.
