The interdisciplinary master's degree in literary translation combines teaching content from the areas of English, German and Romance studies in a four-semester course, depending on the source language / s. The students are taught skills in the field of literary translation as well as special skills in dealing with intercultural processes in order to prepare them for a career in the publishing industry, at institutions for cultural mediation and further education or in companies and associations operating across Europe. The master’s course is characterized by a combination of practical relevance and research orientation. Most of the seminars are held by professional translators, and all students usually complete two internships at the European Translators' College in Straelen eV
Introductions to the areas of translation theory and practice are followed by literary and cultural studies courses in English and / or Romance studies (depending on the source language / s), practical translation seminars and professional studies. The master's thesis is planned for the fourth semester.
The prerequisite for admission is a successfully completed, technically relevant bachelor's degree (minimum grade 2.5) and a German university admission. Bachelor's degree programs in the fields of foreign languages, linguistics and literary studies (at least 10 CP language practice in the selected source language (s) and at least 4 CP linguistics and / or literary studies) are considered relevant. If necessary, some of these achievements can be re-studied. International applicants who do not have a university entrance qualification from the German-speaking area must also demonstrate German language skills at level C2.
The work for German publishers who publish translations of English, French, Italian and Spanish-language literary texts is a suitable field of work.
