The master's degree in art history at Heinrich Heine University builds on a previous successful bachelor's degree in art history. The course is aimed at students who want to deal scientifically and professionally with the history, systematics and theory of art and other visual cultures.
The four-semester course leading to the "Master of Arts" (MA) degree is free of admission with "Proof of special aptitude" (application and aptitude assessment are made directly at Heinrich Heine University) and can be started in the summer and winter semesters
The 4-semester MA program serves to deepen, differentiate and individualize the knowledge acquired in the bachelor’s program. Seminars enable the specific discussion of art-historical issues, team projects give the opportunity to develop practice-related concepts and project seminars serve to acquire professionally relevant skills. Our range of excursions offers the opportunity to gain a profound understanding of the art landscape of historical places in the area and abroad as part of study trips lasting several days. Lectures and a job-oriented internship complete the range of courses.
The prerequisite for admission to the master’s course is the completion of a relevant bachelor’s course at a German university with a grade of 2.3 or better. Degrees from foreign universities can be recognized after all documents have been submitted.
Admission to the master’s course is also possible as a “lateral entry”, ie after completing a bachelor’s course with less art history than in the core subject of a BA art history. For this purpose, a review of suitability is carried out by the academic advisor and additional services may have to be provided. Admission to the master’s degree is possible both in the summer and in the winter semester.
The course aims to achieve a balance between scientific and general competencies required for scientific practice. The aim is to prepare graduates for the broad professional spectrum in which trained art historians can work
