The integrated bachelor's degree in Computational Linguistics
... is both theory and practice-oriented, interdisciplinary, international and in tune with the times.
... started in the winter semester 2017/2018 at the Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf.
... includes the three subjects computational linguistics, linguistics and computer science.
Computational linguistics is an established interface subject that applies computer science methods to linguistic issues. On the theoretical side, attempts are made to analyze and understand human language using mathematically based models. On the practical side, these models are used to develop software tools that enable machine processing of natural language data. Computational linguistics is therefore extremely diverse, just like human language itself.
In the Computational Linguistics Bachelor's degree, both theoretical and practical aspects of the subject are taught. Those who are interested in language but are also open to the disciplines of computer science and mathematics are in good hands with this course. Programming knowledge is not a prerequisite and is imparted in a practice-oriented manner within the framework of the basic modules. After the basic modules there is a specialization in computer science and linguistic areas.
In the introductory phase of the degree, you will acquire basic knowledge in the areas of linguistics, logic and computer science. In addition to an overview of the current state of research, you will be given the skills you need to grasp and describe phenomena and problems in computational linguistics.
From the third semester onwards, you will delve deeper into more complex computational linguistic topics. You will learn to implement more complex programming projects and to develop solutions for specific computer-linguistic tasks. In addition, there is the opportunity to further deepen your newly acquired knowledge in linguistics and computer science.
The course is concluded with a bachelor thesis in which you work on a question of your own choosing and show that you have mastered the theory and practice of computational linguistic research.
Entrance requirement for the bachelor's degree in Computational Linguistics is general or relevant subject-specific higher education entrance qualification.
As the computational linguistics sector is gaining in importance in industry and business, the need for well-trained computational linguists has risen sharply recently. Thanks to the well-founded, varied training, computer linguists are also in demand in many other areas. For example, you can perform tasks in the following fields of activity:
Machine translation, text generation, e.g. for online shops, speech data analysis for marketing purposes (social media monitoring), lexicographical activities (computer-aided dictionary creation), development or optimization of search engines, automatic author recognition or style analysis of texts, development of dialogue systems such as Siri, Cortana, Google Now
