Overview

The research-oriented master’s course is consecutive to philological or equivalent bachelor’s courses. It enables graduates with a philological bachelor's degree or an equivalent degree to deepen and expand their linguistic knowledge at a high level by specializing in structural, historical and practical aspects of European languages, also in comparison with non-European languages. The course offers an in-depth, specialist training based on complex problems in current research areas in linguistics; it imparts subject-specific theoretical and methodological skills and guides research strategies for individual subject-related and interdisciplinary work. As part of interdisciplinary specialist events, it trains scientific judgment skills and promotes the willingness to engage in a creative and open interdisciplinary dialogue. In addition, it offers a broad foreign language education at a high level in two modern European languages. The course allows a focus or specialization in Romance or German linguistics.

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

The master’s course comprises modules in the fields of linguistics and foreign language acquisition.

The structure and course of the course are regulated by the course and examination regulations. It contains detailed descriptions of the content and qualification goals of each individual module and an exemplary course plan. It also defines the type and requirements of the examination performance of the modules and the master’s examination. In the regulations, the credit points (CP) for each module or event as well as the workload in hours for the entire course are given.

In the field of linguistics, students must complete two compulsory modules and four elective modules.
