The aim of the “MA Iranian Studies” is to introduce students to different aspects of the Iranian languages, cultures and religions from antiquity to late antiquity. The students acquire knowledge of Old and Middle Iranian languages ??such as Awestic, Old and Middle Persian as well as a New Iranian language (New Persian or Kurdish). The students expand their expertise in the languages ??and cultures of pre-Islamic Iran as well as in the non-Islamic Iranian religious traditions. You will be trained for autonomous research with a focus on using original sources.


The master’s degree in Iranian Studies is divided into a basic phase as well as a build-up and expansion phase.

For North Kurdish native speakers there is the possibility to complete the basic module: North Kurdish / Kurmanci and / or the advanced module: North Kurdish / Kurmanci through modules from the focus area Iranian Studies of the Bachelor's degree in History and Culture of the Middle East of the Department of History and Cultural Studies at the Free University of Berlin to complete to learn another New Iranian language.

The structure and process of the course are regulated by the course regulations. It contains detailed descriptions of the content and qualification goals of each individual module and an exemplary course plan. The examination regulations define the type and requirements of the examination performances of the modules and the master’s examination. In the regulations, the credit points (CP) for each module or event as well as the workload in hours for the entire course are specified.

The master's thesis should show that the students are able to independently work on and present a research task using scientific methods. After successfully completing the study program, the university degree Master of Arts (MA) is awarded.

To be admitted to the master’s degree, applicants must demonstrate the following requirements:

  • A bachelor's degree in the history and culture of the Middle East (focus on Iranian Studies) or an equivalent other university degree that corresponds to the content and structure of the above-mentioned bachelor's degree at Freie Universität Berlin,
  • Applicants who did not acquire their university degree at an educational establishment in which English is the language of instruction must demonstrate a knowledge of English to the extent of level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages ??(GER) or equivalent knowledge.



Graduates have in-depth scientific knowledge and advanced professional skills.

The master’s degree qualifies students for activities in academic research on Iran as well as in institutions and organizations dealing with Iran (and its neighboring countries / areas) in various professional fields. The following areas can be considered: media, governmental and non-governmental international organizations, publishing, adult and further education, tourism.
