Overview

The course imparts in-depth knowledge of the educational, psychological and sociological foundations of educational science as well as in-depth knowledge of the quantitative and qualitative methods of social research. The students deal with individual, social, organizational, administrative and societal factors influencing educational processes and educational outcomes. The challenges in dealing with heterogeneity are given special consideration. Research and development in educational fields of action are discussed in depth. Design options for educational and upbringing processes are conveyed, and the specifics of planning, organizing, controlling and evaluating measures in various fields of action in educational practice (e.g.

Through presentations, teamwork and self-directed forms of learning and work in the seminars and the research project, the students acquire methodological, social and personal skills. Diversity and gender competence are achieved by reflecting on target group-specific offers within the framework of heterogeneity.

 

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

 

The master’s degree in educational science is divided into the basic area and the specialization area when studying the modules.

The structure and course of the course are regulated by the course regulations. It contains detailed descriptions of the content and qualification goals of each individual module and an exemplary course plan. The examination regulations define the type and requirements of the examination performances of the modules and the master’s examination. In the regulations, the credit points (CP) for each module or event as well as the workload in hours for the entire course are specified.

The master's thesis should show that the students are able to independently work on and present a research task using scientific methods. After successfully completing the study program, the university degree Master of Arts (MA) is awarded.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

To be admitted to the master’s degree, applicants must demonstrate the following requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree (or an equivalent other university degree) with an educational component of at least 60 ECTS, including 10 ECTS in empirical research methods.

The course is restricted in admission.

Proof of German language skills must be provided for applicants who have completed their degree at a foreign university or equivalent institution . This can be done by passing the German language test for university entrance (DSH) or by providing evidence of an equivalent level of knowledge according to the regulations for the German language test for university entrance of foreign applicants at the Free University of Berlin.

 

CAREER PROSPECTS

 

The graduates have an integrated and in-depth knowledge of relevant theories and findings on educational processes. On this basis, they can independently describe, analyze, explain and reflect on educational and upbringing processes. You can design, plan and implement educational measures specifically for target groups. Thanks to their extensive competencies in empirical (quantitative and qualitative) research methods, they are able to carry out studies to describe, explain and optimize educational processes in the various fields of application. You can evaluate educational measures and advise practitioners working in this area on the conceptual level.

The graduates have in-depth and applicable knowledge of the methods of empirical quantitative and qualitative social research. They are able to assess the quality of research and use scientific knowledge to explain and optimize real phenomena as well as practical professional tasks. You can define goals for complex application or research-oriented tasks and choose suitable processes and means to achieve them. You can conceptually consider the importance of different dimensions of diversity (e.g. gender, age, skin color). You have the ability to lead groups responsibly in the context of complex tasks,

The master’s degree qualifies students for activities in university and non-university research in the field of education and upbringing, in evaluation, in advising educational administration and policy, as well as for management and staff positions in educational institutions and their providers (e.g. in the area of ??quality development , Advanced training advice, specialist advice) and other accompanying institutions and organizations (e.g. foundations).
