The master’s degree in culture and media management offers a systematic combination of art and cultural studies research with its concrete application-related implementation in various professional fields of art, culture and media. The aim is a reciprocal transfer of research and knowledge between this university course and various formats of international art and cultural practice.

The master’s course conveys a practice-oriented cross-section of interdisciplinary research questions, particularly from theater, dance and film studies with a common focus on visual culture and performative arts. Individual components at the interfaces of cultural and media management, cultural policy and law are reflected on with regard to their specific applicability for cultural production and for specific practical projects. Particular emphasis is placed on the digital media change in culture and society in order to develop digital skills for innovative forms of cultural production, network building, cultural marketing and cultural participation. 

In the master’s degree, the focus is on the acquisition of application-oriented knowledge resources and methods in a practical culture and media management. In doing so, the master’s degree primarily familiarizes people with the interfaces between art, cultural and media studies. Synergies between theory and practice as well as between the different sciences, cultural institutions and the arts in their issues, methods and modes of representation are particularly encouraged. It also provides impulses for independent, interdisciplinary project development, implementation and quality assurance in various professional fields of cultural institutions, administrations, foundations, associations, companies, media and freelance work. University research, 


For admission to the master’s degree in culture and media management, proof of a professional German or equivalent foreign degree from a university degree in theater studies, dance studies, film studies, art studies, literary studies or cultural studies with a degree of at least 30 credit points in the field of theater studies, dance studies or film studies is required.

The course of studies is characterized by intensive contacts and networking in the art and cultural landscape, the media and press, foundation work and politics as well as the creative and digital economy. The master’s degree is primarily concerned with theatrical performances and performative practices in their various manifestations (including drama, music theater, dance theater, performance, art action, concert) as well as with visual and multimodal modes of perception and action (including visual culture, film and audiovisual media), namely in historical-theoretical perspectives as well as with a view to current socio-economic implications. Particular emphasis is placed on the hybrid interweaving of visual and performative cultures in the global present. 

The structure and process of the course are regulated by the course regulations. It contains detailed descriptions of the content and qualification goals of each individual module and an exemplary course plan. The examination regulations define the type and requirements of the examination performances of the modules and the master’s examination. In the regulations, the credit points (CP) for each module or event as well as the workload in hours for the entire course are specified.

The master's thesis should show that the students are able to independently work on and present a research task using scientific methods. After successfully completing the study program, the university degree Master of Arts (MA) is awarded.
