The master’s course offers in-depth insight into the current state of research as well as contemporary and classical research discussions and enables students to participate in discussions on a wide range of topics in Arabic studies. The students deal exemplarily with selected texts from classical and modern Arabic literature as well as with fundamental identification texts of the Arabic-Islamic culture such as the Koran, Hadith and Tafsir. Subjects of the course are questions of genre and literary form as well as those of symbolism, intertextuality and intermediality. Various research methods and working techniques from the field of literary and cultural studies are applied and practiced.

The master’s degree in Arabic Studies consists of modules from the basic and advanced areas and an interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary area.

The structure and course of the course are regulated by the course regulations. It contains detailed descriptions of the content and qualification goals of each individual module and an exemplary course plan. The examination regulations define the type and requirements of the examination performances of the modules and the master’s examination. In the regulations, the credit points (CP) for each module or event as well as the workload in hours for the entire course are specified.

The aim of the interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary area is to expand the specialist spectrum by completing one or more modules that come from one or more other subjects, are interdisciplinary and represent a meaningful addition to the master’s degree in Arabic studies in terms of method or content.

The master's thesis should show that the students are able to independently work on and present a research task using scientific methods. After successfully completing the study program, the university degree Master of Arts (MA) is awarded.

The degree in the master’s course in Arabic studies qualifies for admission to a doctoral program. The knowledge and skills acquired qualify for employment in governmental and non-governmental institutions and organizations that deal with the Arabic-speaking world and with Arabic-speaking population groups. The following areas come into question: International organizations, non-governmental organizations, German branches of companies and company representatives in the Middle East, authorities, political advice, media, publishing, museums, adult and further education, work with migrants, tourism.
