Overview

The research-oriented master’s degree deepens and expands the basic knowledge acquired in a bachelor’s degree in Greek and / or Latin philology in the field of Greek and Latin literature. In addition to in-depth language skills, the students acquire advanced knowledge of Greek and Latin literature, Greek and Latin linguistics, a further field of ancient studies and methodological and analytical skills based on current research questions. The connection to other humanities disciplines is established by teaching methods that enable interdisciplinary collaboration. These include, for example, theories and models of the neighboring disciplines of ancient studies, other philologies and general literary studies or gender studies. The students acquire the ability to conduct independent academic research in the field of Greek and Latin philology and its reception.

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

The course regulations regulate the structure and course of the course. It contains detailed descriptions of the content and qualification goals of each individual module and an exemplary course plan. The examination regulations define the type and requirements of the examination performances of the modules and the master’s examination. In the regulations, the credit points (CP) for each module or event as well as the workload in hours for the entire course are specified.

Depending on the previous work, students have to complete defined modules in the field of study: Advanced language skills (see table). The evidence distinguishes whether at least 60 CP in Greek Philology and no achievements in Latin Philology *, at least 60 CP in Latin Philology and up to 30 CP in Greek Philology **, at least 60 CP in Greek Philology and at least 30 CP in Latin Philology *** or 90 CP in Greek Philology and 60 CP in Latin Philology ****.

The master's thesis should show that the students are able to independently work on and present a research task using scientific methods. After successfully completing the study program, the university degree Master of Arts (MA) is awarded.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

To be admitted to the master’s degree, applicants must demonstrate the following requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree or other equivalent university degree, each in a course with a minimum of 60 CP in Greek or Latin Philology with evidence of the Graecum and Latinum or an equivalent level of knowledge

 

Proof of German language skills must be provided for applicants who have completed their degree at a foreign university or equivalent institution . This can be done by passing the German language test for university entrance (DSH) or by providing evidence of an equivalent level of knowledge according to the regulations for the German language test for university entrance of foreign applicants at the Free University of Berlin

Graduates have in-depth scientific knowledge and advanced professional skills.

The study in the master’s course in Classical Philology is intended to prepare students for a scientific career and for professional activities in the cultural and educational sectors (e.g. in publishing houses, media, cultural or educational institutions).
