Overview

The teaching profession-related core subject special education at the Free University of Berlin focuses on inclusion. The focus is on emotional and social development, linguistic development and the development of learning, which are particularly central in the field of inclusive schools in everyday school life. The pedagogical challenges of designing lessons for very heterogeneous groups of learners are given special consideration, as are the pedagogical concepts and programs on which school work is based, questions of gender equality and pedagogical inclusion, as well as social values ??and norms.

Special education deals in theory and practice with people who are disadvantaged due to individual and social factors. It is about the accompaniment and support of people with special needs through individual help and the appreciation and recognition of diversity. The aim should be social, school and professional participation and independence in all areas of life.

Program Structure

Special education is studied as a core subject with 90 CP in the teaching profession at integrated secondary schools and grammar schools with a 60 CP module offer suitable for the desired teaching position and the study area Teacher-related Vocational Science (LBW).

The study area of ??teaching related professional science is compulsory for all teaching degree students. There, students deal with educational science, German as a second language and didactics in heterogeneous learning groups as well as the subject didactics of the modules on offer.

At the end of the course, the bachelor's thesis takes place in the core subject as an independent scientific development of a self-selected problem.

Career Prospects

Bachelor graduates are particularly qualified for teacher training or other pedagogical or educational advanced master’s courses and for professional fields of activity such as in educational administration or in special school book or magazine publishers. Teaching at public schools in the State of Berlin is only possible for Bachelor graduates with the option to become a teacher with a Master of Education.

The field of activity at the school includes both subject teaching in the module offer (minor subject) as well as special educational support and diagnostics.
