Mechanical engineering as a universal engineering activity covers all areas from brainstorming to the finished product. As a future master’s graduate, you will primarily take on coordinating and management tasks

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE ( Summer semester )

With the master’s examination you will achieve a consecutive degree.
The aim of the three-semester master’s course is to convey an application-oriented study on a scientific basis, in which a competence-oriented teaching and learning model is in the foreground. The acquisition of methodological skills has priority here.
You should achieve the following specialist knowledge and skills at a higher level than the Bachelor's degree program:

  • the ability to result-oriented development of holistic problem solutions on a scientifically high level,
  • Consideration of business knowledge and cost thinking already in the construction of machines and systems,
  • Implementation of theoretical-analytical skills in application cases of a complex nature,
  • Development of intellectual and social competencies by conveying abstract, analytical thinking that goes beyond the individual case and networked thinking,
  • Teamwork and leadership skills,
  • Communication skills and the ability to work in an interdisciplinary manner.

An individual focus enables you to acquire a training profile according to your personal interests and career aspirations.
In order to actively implement the central training goals, in addition to the classic courses, you will develop independent solutions to complex problems in study and project work and especially in the master's thesis. You will learn how to apply the theoretical knowledge you have acquired in a practical way. In addition, industrial contacts are maintained and continuously expanded.

In research and development projects at the university or together with partner companies, you will have the opportunity to develop creativity and the ability to innovate under competent guidance. The independent and responsible participation in working groups for laboratory exercises and projects strengthens your social and leadership skills.

Objectives of the master’s degree in mechanical engineering (from winter semester 2020/2021)

The central goal of the master’s degree is that you develop a versatile and cross-functional competence profile that includes overview knowledge of current and future relevant technologies as well as assessment competence for their selection and integration. They act as communicators between the disciplines and can be used flexibly in different functions. Mechanical engineers at master's level are able to react to ever faster changing technical requirements with independent knowledge expansion, to develop (technology-based) solution strategies and to design and evaluate them with a view to social, ethical, ecological and cultural aspects and requirements and communicate. With the master’s examination you will achieve a consecutive degree.

Competence Cluster 1: Technologies and Smart Technologies

Mechanical engineering graduates have mastered technological skills and abilities, know new technologies, can apply them and have an overview of current and future relevant technologies as well as assessment competence for their selection and integration. You will be able to analyze machine components and machine systems and design them more intelligently or to develop new, smart machines. You will work out new product development processes that lead to innovations. You can deal with the complexity of current (e.g. data science, cyber-physical systems and AI) as well as future technical developments (such as quantum computing) and think in terms of systems and cycles. You will learn this, for example, by using (virtual) methods and tools for advance calculations, Simulation and product development as well as taking modern information and communication technologies (eg intelligent bus systems, cloud computing) into account for the design of holistically designed mechatronic systems. In the curriculum, this is implemented in the project and research-oriented modules Numerical Mathematics / Numerical Solution Methods, Modeling and Simulation as well as Digital Factory and in the elective catalogs Smart Systems, Digital Twin and AI in Engineering.

Competence cluster 2: Digitization and digital engineering

Graduates of the Masters in Mechanical Engineering have digital knowledge and skills as well as the competence that builds on them to work in highly networked and comprehensively digitized working environments. You have knowledge of data science and programming and discuss the social, economic and ethical aspects of (social) innovations in interdisciplinary teams with product designers, AI researchers and sociologists. This requires a high level of communication and cooperation skills, which is tested in the digitization module and systematically expanded to include the ability to digitally interact and collaborate in cross-disciplinary settings. In this module, students reflect on the effects of complex technical,

Competence cluster 3: leadership and control

Graduates of the course master classic soft skills that are reinterpreted in a complex world: Competencies such as creativity, the ability to reflect and tolerance of ambiguity are more important than ever when dealing with volatile and ambiguous situations. Competencies such as innovation management and entrepreneurship are required in response to the increasing spread of disruptive technologies and are practiced in the innovation management module. In the Leadership and Project Management module, students learn to take on application-oriented management tasks and face entrepreneurial challenges. As project managers, you coach and lead BA students, who experience the digital transformation in a production company in the virtual engineering office module in networks and in close cooperation with industrial partners. In addition, graduates not only design, develop and evaluate intelligent machines, but also reflect on the consequences of their actions in a solution-oriented manner. This is practiced in the module ethics, in which the students learn in an experience-based setting to question problems and to evaluate and, if necessary, renegotiate the solutions that have been developed in terms of technology assessment, ethics and sociology. The research seminar takes into account the strong research orientation of the course, in which lecturers and students work on current technical

You can work in the following areas:

  • Product development
  • development and construction
  • Automation technology
  • Research and test field
  • Technical Sales
  • Manufacturing and production
  • Project and quality management
  • Plant engineering
  • Planning and organization
  • Advice and assessment
  • System simulation and data processing
  • maintenance

The main goal of the master’s degree is to provide you with advanced and higher professional and social skills compared to the bachelor’s degree. The skills you have acquired enable you to embark on a scientific or industrial career with management tasks.
Possible areas of activity are industrial and service companies in mechanical engineering, vehicle construction, electrical engineering, precision engineering, plastics technology as well as areas of companies, authorities and companies that deal with questions of mechanical engineering, production technology or automation technology.
