Overview

Media technology is an engineering degree that is dedicated to the diverse technical aspects of the media world. It is offered by the Faculty of Information, Media and Electrical Engineering

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

The course extends over seven semesters. The course is divided into a three-semester basic course and a subsequent four-semester main course.

The basic course gives you a solid foundation in the basic subjects over the first three semesters. In addition to mathematics and computer science, this includes media technology subjects such as electronic media or photo technology.

In the basic media technology subjects, you will learn more about the physical and electronic functionality of media technologies, such as how images are recorded electronically or how audio and video signals are structured. It will also explain to you how people's perception of image and sound actually works and what rules there are for the design of media.

Image processing
This advanced package deals with algorithms for processing images and the automatic recognition of image content. It is aimed primarily at students who want to work in the field of computer vision, camera technology or the development of image processing systems.

Webengineering
The Webengineering specialization package deals with all aspects of distributed web applications, with a particular focus on communication, security and usability. The challenges addressed in this context are diverse. They range from procedures, methods and technologies for the design of adaptable interaction interfaces, for the implementation of innovative interaction concepts and the appropriate communication protocols to the provision of suitable security concepts and mechanisms for these environments. The many different device classes that have to be taken into account and integrated here add a further level of complexity. The spectrum ranges from smartphones and tablets to desktop PCs and smart TVs.

Interactive computer graphics
In this area we deal with algorithms and data structures for the generation of 3D scenes in real time. This includes in particular the realistic rendering of 3D models, the animation of objects and virtual characters and even virtual reality.

Design of media
This specialization package deals with the theory and application of media-specific design and user experience design topics in the context of digital guidance and information systems, signage and digital storytelling combined with static and moving images. It is aimed at students who are looking for an activity and challenge in the area of ??interfaces to current user experience design areas and the area of ??visual media and various forms of presentation.

Camera technology
The camera technology specialization deals with image recording technologies and internal camera signal processing, as used in commercially available photo and industrial or surveillance cameras. In particular, the properties of the image sensors are modeled and an example of an image processing chain is developed that corrects the hardware properties and simulates the visual functions of the eye. The sensor models can be used, among other things, to generate training data for machine learning of AI applications.

Media distribution and playback
One focus of the content is the technologies and processes of media distribution. In addition to the conventional distribution channels (satellite, cable networks, terrestrial) and streaming applications on the Internet, this also includes the storage and management of media in databases and file-based containers. Media playback is another focus in this area of ??specialization. In terms of content, the focus is on display technologies, color management, display measurement technology and calibration, as well as objective and subjective methods of image quality assessment.

Production technology of audiovisual media
The area of ??production technology of audiovisual media deals with the application of audio and video systems and technologies in television, film and sound production. The entire workflow in media production from image / sound recording to storage and post-processing is dealt with. In the area of ??sound, the focus is on taking into account the respective acoustic properties of the room, signals and levels, microphone technology, as well as handling audio control equipment and the use of digital audio technology. In the video area, the technical handling of infrastructure, systems and signals in the video studio is taught, including in the virtual studio.

Other subjects
In addition to the specialization packages, the modules business administration and law, media law, media ethics and society are mandatory in the main course, as well as the interdisciplinary project. In addition, two further electives are to be chosen from the faculty's offer according to your own interests

CAREER PROPECTS

The fields of activity of our graduates are very broad. These range from the development of the latest media technologies through the production of media to advice and sales in a professional environment.

The industries in which media technologists work include, for example, broadcasting and telecommunications industry, audio and video technology, entertainment industry, internet companies, automotive industry, medical technology, surveillance technology, production of (special) cameras, multimedia technology, CAD and 3D application development. Employment opportunities are also offered in the audio-visual production of film, video, TV, radio, (virtual) photography, multimedia, web applications, 3D and games. This opens up a wide range of fields of activity for our graduates.

Development
In development, you design, develop and test new technologies for the generation, processing and transmission of media. These can be, for example, multimedia systems in cars, apps for mobile applications or methods for improving the recording quality of cameras.

Production
In production, you analyze, evaluate and optimize media production processes or you are responsible for the technical production process. You will typically find your use here in the production area of ??film and television, multimedia and web applications as well as in the 3D and games area.

Consulting
As a consultant, you support companies that develop or produce media technologies with technical and organizational issues. You will analyze business and production processes, develop solutions to open questions and be involved in implementation. All industries that use media technologies are interesting for this activity.

Sales
In sales you plan and implement strategies with which media technologies and services can be made available to your customers. If you are communicative and like to deal with economic issues, you have come to the right place. However, your expertise in the field of media technology is also required in order to be able to respond to customer requirements in a targeted and professional manner.

As a media technologist, you have many options for starting your own business. Whether you are starting out as a freelancer in post-production and 3D or in web development, or starting your own company - if you would like to take on personal responsibility quickly, this is the way for you
