In practice-oriented courses (modules), students acquire the knowledge and skills they need to be able to work in an engineering manner.
The focus here is on

  • Generation, distribution and effective use of electrical energy based on renewable energies and
  • Generation and distribution of bioenergy from renewable raw materials and biological residues.


The bachelor's program in Renewable Energies comprises seven semesters, including a practical phase or a semester abroad. It has a modular structure, ie the exams are taken alongside the course after the individual modules have been completed.

Abitur or advanced technical college entrance qualification or previous training recognized as equivalent and proof of practical work lasting ten weeks (pre-study internship). Evidence must be provided by the beginning of the fourth semester at the latest. However, it is recommended that you complete the pre-study internship before starting your studies. Details can be found in the examination regulations.

This practical activity (the pre-study internship) does not apply to anyone starting their studies at the Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences in the winter semester 2021/22. You do not have to provide evidence of the internship either when you enroll or at a later date. The performance is purely voluntary, but helpful and recommended for the desired course of study.

Due to the two-pronged structure of the bachelor's degree in renewable energies in electrical energy and bioenergy, the inclination of the graduates has two different branches open to them.

On the one hand, there are known and new areas of electrical engineering / energy technology. This ranges from generation and distribution to efficient use. Efficient use in particular is a major new challenge in a wide variety of sectors. So far, completely neglected energy saving reserves in data centers, in communication technology, in industrial drives, in production lines, in municipalities and in private households are tapped with innovative processes.

On the other hand, in the field of bioenergy it is above all the so far hardly developed fields of plant automation and plant control technology, in which the well-developed skills and knowledge of electrical engineering come into their own.
