Overview

The four-semester master’s degree prepares students for work in science-related professional fields. Graduates are able to work independently scientifically and application-oriented as well as interdisciplinary and to classify the scientific findings critically.

The knowledge acquired in the bachelor's degree in the fields of biochemistry, cell and molecular biology and bioprocess engineering is deepened in the first two semesters, in particular with regard to applications in medicine (e.g. molecular pharmacology, molecular medicine, tissue engineering) and biotechnological production processes .

The research project in the third semester offers the opportunity to deal with selected methods in more detail.

In the final thesis in the fourth semester, the skills for application-oriented and independent scientific work should be proven.

Research project and thesis can also be easily combined with a stay abroad.

  Note: There are 4 compulsory elective modules to choose from in the 1st and 2nd semester of the curriculum. The faculty council decides on the specific offer. Further modules can be provided as compulsory elective modules by resolution of the Faculty Council.          

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

  • University degree (Bachelor or Diploma) in the field of biotechnology with an overall rating of at least "good"
  • A decision can be made about the suitability of comparable previous training.
  • Knowledge of English

CAREER PROSPECTS

Biotechnology is one of the key technologies of the 21st century.

There are now over 600 companies in Germany that deal with research, development and production in the field of modern biotechnology, divided into five important fields of application :

  • In the application field of red biotechnology , drugs are manufactured with the help of biotechnological processes, which also play an increasingly important role in the development of new drugs and forms of therapy as well as in diagnostics.
  • In the chemical industry, more and more substances can be produced using so-called white biotechnology in a way that conserves resources and the environment instead of costly chemical-physical processes .
  • In modern plant breeding, biotechnological methods ( green biotechnology ) are used to specifically introduce resistance to pests or to change the composition of ingredients.
  • In environmental technology, biotechnological processes ( gray biotechnology ) help with soil remediation, wastewater treatment, exhaust air or exhaust gas purification and waste or residual material recycling.
  • Biotechnological processes and products traditionally play a major role in the food and beverage industry .

Graduates of the master’s degree will work in research institutions or in industry in the field of research and development, quality assurance or production.

A doctorate can be added after the master’s degree.
