Overview

The course prepares students for a variety of professional fields in biotechnology and applied biosciences and leads to a professional and practice-oriented degree. It is geared towards learning basic scientific principles and methods and qualifies for independent activities in application-oriented research, development, production or administration.

In the first and parts of the second semester, the necessary mathematical and scientific fundamentals are imparted. In addition, interdisciplinary key qualifications can be acquired through elective modules from the General Studies.

From the second semester onwards, the subject-specific basics in the biosciences (biochemistry, molecular and cell biology and microbiology) and in bioprocess engineering, which are deepened in the fourth and fifth semesters, take a large part.

In the sixth semester, the students are instructed in a practical project and the bachelor thesis on application-oriented and scientific work and learn to present the results achieved in a suitable form. The practical project and the thesis in the sixth semester can be carried out abroad on request.

CAREER PROSPECTS

Biotechnology is one of the key technologies of the 21st century. In Germany there are around 600 companies that deal with research, development and production in the field of modern biotechnology.

The most important field of application for biotechnology is medicine (red biotechnology). More and more drugs such as therapeutic proteins and antibodies are now being manufactured with the help of biotechnological processes. Biotechnological processes are increasingly playing an important role in the development of new drugs (including for cancer treatment) and forms of therapy (e.g. tissue engineering) and in diagnostics (immunoassays, DNA chips, biosensors, PCR-based methods).

In modern plant breeding (green biotechnology), biotechnological methods are used to specifically introduce resistance to herbicides, insects, fungi and viruses, or to change the composition of ingredients, such as “golden rice” enriched with provitamin A. Transgenic animals and plants can be used as bioreactors (pharming).

In environmental technology (gray biotechnology), biotechnological processes help with soil remediation, wastewater treatment, exhaust air or exhaust gas purification and the recycling of waste and residues.

White biotechnology is becoming increasingly important for the chemical industry and many other processes, as a large variety of substances such as vitamins, amino acids, antibiotics and alcohol can be produced in a more environmentally friendly and resource-friendly manner through the use of enzymes or microorganisms.

Biotechnological processes and products traditionally play a major role in the food industry (cheese) and the beverage industry (beer).

Graduates of the bachelor's degree will work as scientific or technical employees in research institutions or in industry in the field of research and development or production.
