In a complex and dynamic world, knowledge of visual codes and their design conditions and potential has become indispensable. In addition to the written form as the ideal of scientific justification and argumentation, visual rhetoric and different visualization strategies are increasingly appearing, which accompany knowledge processes and decision-making in science and research, but also in business and politics. The spaces of experience and knowledge of digital media culture, in addition to artistic image creations or illustrative approaches, are increasingly dependent on analytical tools for visualization (mapping, image statistics, navigation).

In the master's degree in "Visual Communication", students can study in the specializations of the respective professorships of the degree program. Currently these are graphic design, typography, information design, staged and documentary photography, image / text conception, advertising, film / video, visual culture. The technical supervision of the students in the master’s projects is provided by at least one professorship from the practical area of ??the course and one professorship from the theory area. The application for the course should show the focus on one of the practical focuses taught.

Studying in the “Visual Communication” master’s course requires a particularly high level of initiative. The course also enables commissioned work and topics with a high level of practical relevance to be carried out inside and outside the university. The work is supervised in group consultations as well as in individual one-on-one discussions. As part of their studies, the equipment of the university or the faculty of art and design (e.g. workshops, laboratories, library) is available to the students.
